There is no limit. When I moved to Arkadia I tested that before stacking and using containers. I stopped at 800+ items, so I assume no limit.
Plus: the order gets messed up. And, even worse, you cannot stack them anymore. Example: you had 499 items. You stack 40 items from your last hunt...
