OK, following some weird insuations on another thread, thought I better start my own thread to make my position clear (and save the other thread from going off-topic)

A long time ago, some people in a Soc I don't belong belong to fell out with some others in that Soc, and left thatt Soc, taking Normandie Radio with them. Those that didn't leave the Soc joined another Radio station , naturally enough.

None of this had anything to do with me; in fact, I'm pretty much in the dark about the whole thing, and I see no reason whatsoever why not stay friends with both sets of people. So i did, inasmuch as I got along with them in the first place. As far as I know, the whole episode is water-under-bridge now, anyways, and if those people bear any ill-will towards each other, they don't tell me about it.

There are probably loads of people who know the story better than I do, I'm just relating what little i know; and I shouldn't think there's any need to elaborate, anyways.

    I just want to say that i don't have any position on this. If there are warring factions, i don't belong to either faction, and i'm not even aware of any war. I doubt that any war exists, outside the heads of the of the occasional shit-stirrers;

I do catch weird vibes, round the Normandie Radio people now and then, but i never know if that's me being a little bit paranoid, somebody developing a personal dislike for me (Nobody's lovable to everybody, after all, not even me :D ) or...whatever. But just in case it's "whatever," I thought i better make some kind of statement, to clear the air

I'd also like to apologise to people if I seem a bit dense, don't take hints etc. fact is, i'm just crap at taking hints, reading subtext and all that, nothing personal, that's just a blind spot of mine. So if you don't want me around, or something like that (as I vaguely and uncertainly feel sometimes) you just have to say so loud and clear. Also if you've got a little clique that excludes certain people, and i'm somehow trangressing the boundaries, you better spell that out too, because I don't really follow all that stuff, I'm far from sure sure who's in what clique and who isn't, and just take people as I find them, as individuals. I don't intend to tread on anybody's toes. So if if I do, just yell, huh?

I can only think of one person, in all this, that i actually dislike (he knows who he is) and I don't think he was part of that original dispute any more than I was. I dislike him because, the longer i know him, the more it looks to me like he's always bitching and sniping at people. I might be wrong, but that's how it honestly looks to me.

But, anyway, if such a crazy thing as Radio wars really exist (which I doubt. Because last time I heard a load of shit about Radio wars, it was really Chuck Caly RocknRoll v everybody else, lol, and it it just so happened that one of his myriad antagonists was also a DJ ) I'm not on anybody's side. I don't even listen to the radio very much. No offense, I'm just rubbish at multitasking; so being active in-game whilst listening to something else is something that i can;t keep up for very long, if at all, without phasing out one or the other. when I say "I might crash" I'm not only thinking of my PC. :D

    Hope this clears the air.

    Thanks for listening

    jay :)

    Hi,

no idea what you're talking about en detail, my friend (I'm not in any EU radio, and I fail to see any reason to change this), but I agree. I have seen fights over and over about such.
Not good, little padavans. Fight what you want, but do not hurt your brethren and sistren, plz!

For me, these radios fail in bringing me anything when I'm on line. The commercial trash most are playing - I can hear this junk day in day out on my vanilla radio, and that's why this is rotting peacefully in its rack. I just can't stand it.

I have recherched that there'd be a station that would play something that could bait me - but at a time I cannot be on. Cool. Fun, really fun. Swallow it.

There's plenty of streaming on the net, what exactly for do I need an EU radio stream? Especially if it's done by amateurish speakers that refuse to remove their chewing gum before moderating, making it impossible for me to understand (as a not native English speaker)?

And if they start to fight each other, well, who cares? Isn't it virtual masturbators fighting other virtual masturbators? Anybody among them proud like a fresh atrox when the audience becomes 3-digit for some minutes?

Nah. Nada. No. Never. Ever. BullDung.

I could imagine well done podcasts. I could even imagine paying for them. But then I'd expect quality, and music tailored to different audiences.

    Have fun!

Xandra, thanks for the kind thoughts, but i think you've got the wrong end of the stick.

This "Radio Wars" appellation is all smoke and mirrors...as usual. And I've received some very constuctive and reassuring PM's (will reply later- thankyou!) which leave me all the more convinced of that.

Really theres nothing more between the various Entropian Radio stations , but the kind of friendly rivalry you'd expect.

To explain how this seems to get "out of hand" i think it's safer to delve into ancient history:

Down the years , i've known a couple occasions when "bad blood" developed between two DJs on the same station. The upshot was that one or other of them left to join another station. No big deal, hmm? However, this often gets misrepresented as bad blood betwen the two stations, which is really to put the cart before the horse, so to speak. Bad blood between two DJ's does NOT equate to bad blood between stations, it just means that DJs are human , like everybody else :D and that they'd rather not work with people they can't get along with.

The Chuck Caly RocknRoll (aka Calyptoranus) dingdong was something else. This guy had his very own radio station. 50% of EU players hated him for well-known reasons; maybe 1% (mostly newbies) werre followers of his radio station and himself; and the rest were indifferent/ knew nothing about it. He was often denounced in public, because people wanted to warn the newbies against hiim. Now, surrise, surprise, a few of those denouncers belonged to rival radio stations. Statistically speaking, it would've been amazing if that hadn't been the case

That the allegations against Caly had substance is pretty much proved by the fact that his first ava (Calypto) was permabanned. Why the next one was permitted to stay is a mystery. But he was, and he put it about that the ongoing denouncements were all about jealousy , because he had more listeners than another station had.

This waas clearly total BS, because most of his antagonists had no connection with any radio station at all and couldn't care less about radio.. But for that 49% who neither knew nor cared what was really behind it, that seemed plausible enough, so the whole thing got labelleled as Radio Wars.

Now, I've no reason to think that there's anything like that much bad blood around. It's more like two or three individuals having issues with each other, or something like that. No reason for anybody else to make a fuss.

The point of the Caly story is to show how easy it is to stir up that kind of thing if you're inclined to.

    Hi Jay,

well, guess it's most about Caly and the dung he stirred up. It's not over yet, as far as I know. Why isn't he just ignored, or maybe sometimes warned of, with no additional coverage?

What I described is the view of me only, as someone not personally interested in (the current) EU radios, but reading the forums. And what I see is fuzzing and fighting. This may be wrong, due to the lack of further intelligence, but it's the impression I get reading over the posts.

Another topic is why I am not interested in the service - this isn't the fault of the stations necessarily. I understand that they have to look for a certain size of audience, and that, due to the tiny size of the potential audience it's at most a job for hobbyists.

    And here come the problems:

    1. EU is an international game, and by far not all colonists are native English speakers. This would require speakers able to deliver a language like BBC or vice.com (as examples) does, you'll not get many supporters among those that just cannot understand you.
This would require mandatory transcripts whenever an interview is made. I might point to a blog entry of me, it's related.
My guesstimate would be that you have max. 50% native speakers, and even those divide in UK and USA, with the connected problems of understanding ...
      .
    2. Music is a thing ppl fight over. One will start singing and dancing, the other will start to puke. Music is the key to your audience, and as long as you narrow down your music to a special taste you have effectively narrowed down your audience.
Many ppl will accept a "puke song" (for them) once in a while, as long as it's surrounded by "acceptable" or "good" ones. So a mixed choice of music will bring you ways more audience!
But don't play what we hear in the daily RL radio all day long (as, for instance, AHR does exactly this while I'm writing) - be creative, Bo Diddley, Culture Club and AC/DC aren't really why I would fire up a web radio for - this is played up and down in my local radio stations already, day in day out. Cannot hear this anymore! There's more of music!
      .
    3. If doing an EU radio, make it more than just a jukebox operated by a bot. Comment the HoF's in real time, have observers (radio alts approved by MA) on the planets, interview the lucky winners! (EU chat translated into voice by the reporter)
Talk about changes in the hunting behavior, tell your audience where there's new loot to reap, offer real time ads for a coin ("Joe TheGreedy Mafia will buy up to 12K oil for 10*% at Port Atlantis, for 1h from now")

Hope you recognize my benevolent intention. I'd really like a (or 2, 3, 4 or even more) true unique EU radio stations, suited to the game and it's participants, adding value and entertainment. But what we have now doesn't impress me at all. I don't know if what I described would work - but, for sure, it'd be a radio I'd watch. You bet.

    Have a good time!

I'm not a big fan of radio. The one thing I currently appreciate about the EU radio station are the developer interviews. Along with what Xandra said, I'd tune in more if I knew I would hear useful info about the game instead of just tunes that are in someone else's playlist.

To simply things, here's the basic point of it:

IRL there are unicorns, in EU there are radio wars, got it? I started this thread, because somebody else seemed so sure of their existence, thAT they even knew which side I fighting for, and disapproved of me fighting dirty!

I've learned that you really have to speak loud and clear for yourself in this game, if you'd rather not have your POV distorted beyond all recognition :D

And, btw, I do agree with Neil and Xandra: it would be really nice to hear more of the less commercial stuff in EU radio. But TBH, I'd never listen much, because it does my poor brain to listen and play same time. So why should my opinion count for much?

P>S> Actually, i really loved it, back when Normandie Radio was the on-board radio for ToS Normandie, we nearly all listened in, and Bonnie and Brownie used to often give in to peculiar requests from the crew; some of which were funny and some of which were merely peculiar. I don't think I'll ever hear such an eclectic mix of sounds again, nor share the experience with such an eclectic mix of people. Those were the days *sigh*.

What I like about the EU radios is that it gives the community a choice. I have always supported all radios stations, even when I was running my own on MSR, because I don't think it should be a competition, but rather an effort to provide a service that brings value to the listening audience. If you don't like something on one radio station, then tune into another until you find something you like.

For instance ... tonight I tuned into Atlas Haven Radio and listened to a new DJ -- DJ Izzy -- a friend on FB, and a really great guy. He played blues and rock and the tunes just hit home for me - he did a great job, but then ... I have other favorite DJ's on AHR and Normandie Radio and I'll tune into them as well when I can.

I don't think any of us should be put into a position where we might be expected to choose sides - I don't like playing that game, and I won't - I like choice, and being free to appreciate those who bring entertainment value.

I really like listening to good music while engaging in my EU experiences, or even when I'm just sitting at home relaxing, but I can also appreciate the interviews and more informative content a radio can bring to the community. I wouldn't want the airwaves flooded with it, because I really enjoy the music and my favorite DJ's, but perhaps there could be designated times for developer or player interviews, or news hours that keep us updated on what's happening within our universe.

The thing is though, you have to have those who are interested in reporting the news, because it takes time and effort to not only assemble it, but to keep up on it so that things are current. Also, it takes a bit of production time for interviews as well, and we have a few DJ's out there who are doing a great job already, but then there's scheduling that needs to be taken into consideration, and that's not always easy, especially if you're also a DJ who has his or her own shows to produce.

Bottom-line ... the variables are many, and as listeners, I think it's a good thing to give feedback in an effort to help the radio stations improve on their entertainment value, but also to be mindful that it's not always easy to implement. We have yet another radio station emerging soon ... Radio Arkadia ... and that will give us even more choices.

Perhaps one day I'll bring MSR back as well, but for now, I have writing commitments and impending projects that I'm rather excited about, and not much time to manage a radio station, but I'll leave it at that. I loved having MSR active, even though it was more a 24/7 eclectic jukebox with periodic live shows and event fun, but I now have MSM to keep me busy, and I enjoy just tuning in when I'm in the mood.

I don't think there are "radio wars" per se - but maybe personality disputes that make it seem so, and it's unfortunate that others can get caught up in that. I say, let them work it out and leave us to our listening choices.

Whatever the issue was with you Jay, I hope it gets/got sorted, because it's nice seeing you in the Quarry and being able to chat and enjoy the music and chat with the others.

    Cheers! :)
