I posted this over in PCF in response to a thread. After re-reading it I thought I'd share it here, since IMHO it's got some good advice in it....

A good number of players have unfounded fears and misconceptions about space. I've spent a lot of time there and to be honest, I find no reason to fear going into space. If you can afford the fee (around 10 peds right now) or have your own ship, you can fly safely and have fun, without the need to worry... IF you follow these (mostly common sense) rules:
    1. Leave your stackables (lootables) at home. If you're relocating, sell them off first. Anything that lives in your "Materials" and "Mined Resources" section of your inventory is lootable. Oil in a vehicle fuel tank is not lootable.
    2. If you need to take stackables, then you must use a reputable motherships or privateer service. Prices are quite cheap, ranging from 5 to 50 peds depending on the level of service. Warp flights can be faster than quad flights, and can be very convenient as well. Check on this forum for the various warp flight advertisements. Be sure you're on a direct passenger flight--don't take stackables on space mob hunts! And only fly on a reputable and trusted mothership or privateer when it is being flown by its normal crew, not by a 3rd party who is renting it.
    3. If you're piloting your own VTOL or Quad:
      • Take plenty of fuel (at least 7 peds)
      • Take an RK-5 tool
      • Take welding wire (1k or more)
      • Make sure your thruster has at least .3 ped TT value left on it before entering space (if you're planning to land on a planet)
      • Each traveler must take at least 7 peds so you can TP down to a planet in the event you get separated from your ship (if not, you'll still need to pay 2 peds, per ship, for the re-entry tax)
      • Do not leave or enter a planet, a space station, or a server between 7:55 am and 8:25 am (MA time)
      • Get all travelers on each other's friend lists. Disconnections are fairly common.
      • Know the basics of space travel (vehicle controls, safe zones, ship decay, vehicle repair, space mobs, recalling vehicles, waypoints, server zones, etc.)
      • Make sure you have fully downloaded your planet of destination
      • Give yourself extra time. You may have to wait for the safe zone to clear, CTDs, etc.
      • Avoid space mobs (orange triangles) if you don't want to hunt them or get killed
      • If a pirate is harassing you, take screen shots and send a support case. He's allowed to shoot you down, that's PVP. But harassment is a violation of EULA.
      • Remember that pirates are some of the least patient players in EU. You can easily wait them out. In addition, some pirates are really just juvenile attention-seekers. If they start pushing your ship or shouting insults at you, simply ignore them. Turn off all chat and go about your business, they eventually will leave you alone. Or better yet, follow my final suggestion and take advantage of the pirate:
      • If a pirate shoots at you, and you're like me and don't like PVP, don't fret. Just think of it as a game and your score is the number of shots it takes to shoot you down. Reverse the camera and evade the shots. Don't worry about the decay on your quad or VTOL - it's minimal and worth the fun of watching him waste peds on a no-looter. Each shot is .4 ped. Plus, you do get defensive skills dodging the lasers. Think of it like sweating, only here the pirate is paying for your skilling and you don't have to worry about finding a sweat buyer afterward :) Be sure to go back again and again until the pirate is "dry".
    4. If you're a VTOL or Quad passenger:
      • Fly with a pilot you trust. Even though you're not carrying stackables, your pilot could still abandon you on a remote station or otherwise make your life difficult if he's the malicious type.
      • If you own a VTOL, take it with you (along with oil and repair equipment). If your pilot has computer problems or abandons you, you will be able to fly to your destination and TP down (using the 7 ped you so wisely brought with you).
      • Follow any other applicable rules in part 3) above.

Those are the basics. Follow them and you'll be a happy space traveler. Enjoy the sights and have fun. If you ever need a rescue, post here on the forum and you should get a response soon-ish.

I dont know about fear but I dont see the fun. Last time I traveled, I flew myself to Caly in a vtol. no hassles except boredom. Coming back I hired a quad pilot cos I know the hassles in getting away from caly. Was at least 20 or 30 minutes getting away from Caly space cos one pirate can sit in the save zone and see all ships in the area. (had time to make cuppa tea). We only got away when another player came up and was less careful than us. Then there was the boring flight back here.

How is this fun? I would love to me making regular trips between caly and ark but I cant be arsed dealing with the stress and boredom.

Nevertheless, a bunch of useful tips. Good work!

Sounds like you'd enjoy flying in the Normandie much better. They're part of ASF and the flight feels (and actually is) much faster and more social (more fun) and you don't have to do the "wait until the pirate goes away" thing. Plus you can take stackables if you need to. They offer a 100 ped monthly unlimited flight subscription which are quite affordable for frequent flyers. They offer one-time flights too. I recommend them.

Waiting out pirates isn't much fun, but (personally) I do find the long quad flights enjoyable. It's a great time to chat. I like the freedom to fly wherever I want and I do get a sense of adventure from sitting in that lonely cockpit watching the planet slowly get bigger and bigger. And the occasional waking up from a doze to find a space mob or asteroid filling half my screen...

If it's uneventful, it can be boring.. but it gets interesting when you talk to the pirates in local chat while they chase you.. :p

Space is fun if you like exploring. If you're only in space because you want to go somewhere, yeah it's boring.

Just depends on your view of it.

Space is ok, I am not a fan of lootable pvp zones but don't carry stackables is the rule I guess and them the rules I can't do anything about it. I do take one stackable item 1 big pile of dung, a special gift to the pirate that shoots me down which happens most every time I leave calypso, the others are not so bad just a few times but calypso thing only once I made it out first time.

I do like going between planets, the rides are long in my vtol but oh well I'm not in a rush. As far as having fun dodging pirates that just fuels their enjoyment, I don't want them to have fun I want them to be bored as hell so they quit. After first shot I stop my vtol and just let them shot me, no challenge just a waste of their ammo and time. Sometimes they try to talk to me and I refuse to partake in their mind games they are just going to gun ya down anyways.

The safe zones I feel are way to small and makes it way to easy for the campers. I also think they should get rid of the arrows. I don't want anyone in space to know I'm there unless they strain their eyes really hard to find me as a moving pixel dot. The flags just say "shoot me, shoot me, I am here please for the love of flippen sake shoot me...."

Just my take on space lol, I go there, because I like to play the entire universe, I don't really enjoy it because of the campers and leaving planet safe zones sucks. But I've realized I can't do a thing about it so.....

I'm not a fan of lootable zones.. so I usually take one nova fragment or 1 sweat with me... If I see someone I know is a pirate, I'll ask them if they want a fragment or sweat.. If they chase me, they waste ammo (a lot more than if I just stood still, especially in a quad). One pirate I was actually able to out-maneuver enough that he was far enough behind me so as to not be able to actually do damage even though he appeared to hit me. I kept taunting him (not really, just continued the conversation) in local chat as he chased me halfway to Rocktropia before he broke off and I made a wide turn to Arkadia.. He made at least 30-40 shots and only hit me once... So he wasted a LOT of ammo. :p

    Excellent tips.

Maybe one of the moderators can make this a sticky?

Good tips Neil, maybe add something about knowing and trusting the pilot you get a ride from as well if you plan on carrying stackables, since those of us who have used space a fair bit know that some are in partnerships with pirates and will simply sell you out to them (never admitting that ofc). Personally, I can see where the whole concept is going now and it is going to be the privateers and motherships for traders, super fast and super safe (so far) and a little surprizing that anyone who trades and carries stackables this far down the road doesn't know all of this, or have the patience to wait for a ticket on a MS, or to hire fighters as escort, but it still happens.

@Ion, admins are looking and I leave it to them to decide on the sticky idea :)

Agreed some excellent tips and guidelines here.

Neil, I've reformatted the list a bit to make it easier to read. And as suggested by Ion, I have made the thread sticky in the Space section.

When aproaching a planet don't stop at the space station by pressing T, rather avoid them and try a direct route to the planet that is far away from it. Specially at a busy planet like Calypso. You might save on fuel by reviving at a station, but leaving it and heading to its planet can be harder with all the pirates camping it.

If you are flying alone you can wait in your passenger seat until the coast is clear before leaving a safe zone. That way you won't burn fuel while waiting for a pirate to get bored or chase another target.

I did that a bit today when I went to Calypso today to pick up a few things.. There were about three red triangles so I hopped in passenger seat until there was only one *had to go make a phone call at the time anyway* -- then made sure where he was at in relation to me (he happened to be above me on the other side of the station). Then I went straight down until he was off radar and then made a wide turn to Arkadia.

Another thing you can do is get in a team and set the pirate as a team target. This helps you not only pick him out of the crowd, but judge your distance. If you're more than .1 au away, you're safe if you're in a quad, unless he's got a UL quad.

Lol... this gave me a good laugh, impatient? rofl... been plenty of pirates taking shifts camping a "logged out" avatar for days b4 since said avatar thought they were goining to do the ol' log-out and save my loots trick.

Theres also that whole sit for 45 minutes waiting for some1 to leave or enter planet, yep we're all just a bunch of impatient adhd crack-rabbits!

Minor addition to point 4.ii: clarify the player does NOT need a thruster to fly in space, only if entering or leaving a planet.

Thanks Rick. I sometimes forget about that point now that thrusters are so cheap.... it was a big deal back when they were 500 ped each :)

I made my maiden voyage lastnight. had to fly to Caly and pick up a Kismet for the Quad. enjoyed the flight through Space and had no problems getting to Caly, it was on the way back that was attacked and blown up twice by pirates. the first pirate that shot me down was nice enough to help me fix my Quad at the Space Station.

Q: Where do I find these Space Mobs.

Q: Is Next Planet the closet place to Arkadia.

I really didn't like Caly but I just went in and out doing some of the missions on my way to the AH. and I do not plan to search them out but do plan on fighting back next time a pirate shoots at me. I don't mind a good dogfight.
