Another update in space and travel time to Calypso for trading is now an hour in a QUAD.

What does this mean for Arkadia? The urgency for Arkadian Hangars/Privateers should now be the first priority for the A-Team. Maybe one or two Calypso based Motherships travel to Arkadia and now we have to wait for them to get Warp drives. The privateers based around Calypso are still inactive mostly, which leaves the Arkadian population with a transport problem.

My suggestion is a new event for Arkadia. "THE ARKADIAN HANGAR EVENT"
Place 25 Hangar deeds (UL Privateer/UL Thruster/Hangar) in the loot of Arkadian mobs over two weeks. Any mob from Oro to Teladon. These Hangars should be located at Celeste Harbour. For now just use the Calypso Privateer design and change to Arkadian designed ship later. These 25 Arkadian Hangars/Privateers are based from Arkadia so hopefully we can establish our own transport fleet!

We need Arkadian warp speed ships and we need them yesterday! :dark:

    Cheers
    Bjorn

I dont see the travel time as much of a problem as the fact that you do now enter space directly into PVP.. That is the biggest thread to Arkadias needs of goods from Caly/other planets..

This is not good... so pirate can just wait outside atmo ans shoot anything that tries to leave planet?

I agree that we need some Arkadian specific vehicles asap and hangars wont hurt. But I actually feel new bigger space is best thing since sliced bread... I want to be more isolated from calypso... I want us to become more independent.

I would tend to agree here... I think if Space is bigger it's going to be harder for players to go back and forth and more items are going to stay on Arkadia. Only time will tell if that's actually the case, however.

I actually like the new space. I was flying around all morning and even managed to waste about 40 peds of pirates' ammo while doing some testing of vtol speed (taking no decay!).

By the way, here are the numbers I got if you want them:

    Time to travel 1 au:
    Quad: 1 minute 54 seconds
    VTOL: 3 minutes 28 seconds
Given speed of the above ships, that makes 1 au = 3.3 km

Kismet laser range: ~.066 au or 210m (specs say 220m range)
Visual target range: ~.2 au or 660m

**These numbers are based on one-time measurements, so may not be very accurate.

    So... the impact on travelers:
It's no different from before except that it takes longer to travel. This means tack on about 3 ped extra for fuel costs and plan about 45 minutes for travel time instead of 20. As far as I'm concerned, it makes no difference to the transport of stackable materials... in my opinion, those were unsafe to transport before, and they remain so. And there are few resources that we need to import, crafters need to transition to using Arkadian bps instead of Calypsian bps (i know this is not 100% possible right now).

If you want to trade, I recommend trading the unlootable crafted items or get a fleet of ships to escort you (but really... what materials are really worth the transport cost at the volume you can sell on arkadia?)

I'm still not seeing any active privateer vessels, maybe that will change with warp drive, if they become useful ships, then yes, I think Arkadia should have some too.

I think todays update will be one to far for many and will kill off personaly space travel. I doubt many will like being held to ransom by hanger or MS owners, Ark based or not.

They didn't get the message that people didn't like the lootable but they're determined to continue down that path no matter what the cost.

Personally I'll be doing exactly what I was doing before - ignoring space and space travel totally.

I hope the A team continue to strive to make Ark totally independent of Calypso.

Sorry but thats my personal feelings.

btw the warp drive seems to be an L item, unless MA have changed tack all of a sudden.

I think the new changes to Space provide that opportunity perfectly, Spike... So in that way I really like what they did.

I guess only time will tell.

but I think we'll see massive inflation on certain items and resources then a massive crash.

unfortunately it seems also to be a way to keep the bulk of the players on Calypso.

Thats the key to this enitre thing in that one statement..A way to keep players on Caly. This crap MA has done is soley to protect themselves. I said it before and Ill say it again I seriously think MA planed on making at least one planet fail (possibly all in end stratagy) so they had to take over and get free developement since they have ZERO imagination left on how to create things that will draw players to EU. All the copy paste crap they have added from other games proves that beyond a doubt. Not much left for them to canabalise from other games and since that all didnt bring more players they are grasping at straw trying to hold hostage all they can by any means necessary.

If Arkadia does develope its own space craft they might wanna think to make repair gear that uses only Arkadia based componants. In fact that should be done now because I know there are many people that refuse to use vehicles since that bullshit came about with the welding wire and forcing vehicle users to invest in other planets economies instead of their own. In any case dont be expecting this all to get better any time soon. MA is isolating the competition more and more each VU.

Guys, why all the negativity? So what, it takes 20 minutes longer to fly to your destination... space is supposed to be a BIG place. So just go afk for a little while longer, while your pilot does his thing. Or take a mothership and you don't even have to stay online.

Why should expansion of space be bad for Arkadia's economy? We are nearly self-sufficient--or will be soon--and those items that we need can still be easily imported without risk of looting, as long as you're not trying to craft them here. And in case you didn't notice, a large percentage of the new players who started on Arkadia are now on Calypso because space travel is so easy and often free and so many people say "Calypso is the place to start" for no better reason than it's bigger and has more people. And some of them just want to explore Calypso (which is fine, I would too). So making space travel a little harder and a little more expensive could possibly increase the number of players who decide to stay on Arkadia, since most of our players are brand new recruits, not immigrants from Calypso.

Well atm it's still debatable if going offline in a MS is an exploit or not. Are you willing to risk being locked at a later date when more people use it and don't feed the pk'ers loot.

It's difficult not to be pessimistic when we've experienced nerfs over the years that have restricted our options only to see one that now restricts where we spend our time even more.

Could you imagine being told you'd have to wait an hour to travel between Eudoria and Amethera doing nothing but look at empty space or fall prey to a pk'er if you afk for 2 minutes. The EU I originally joined and liked is rapidly vanishing being replaced by carbon copy elements from other games but badly implemented. X-Wing released in 1993 had better space combat, atleast it supported a joystick and throttle control other than on or off and that was dos based and ran on a 386 (ask your parents if you don't know what that is).

I made the jump before space launched but I hate to say it with the number of globals on Ark barely registering compared to Calypso it's hardly surprising that new people will want to move away even with a heavily restrictive transport system. Even I'm beginning to question if I made the right choice and I've been more active on Ark since I moved than Calypso since vu9.

And tbh atm I'm more likely to quit completely than to head back to Calypso.

I could decend into a big rant, well more than what I've already written, it's totally out my power to make any changes and it's pointless to say any more as no one seems to be listening at MA but in the end it leaves me feeling that I'm being slowly shown the door and pushed out of EU.

Like a restaurant or bar thats decided it wants to go up market and tries to get rid of it's regulars in favour of the current 'in' crowd.

I was planning on buying a Quad soon. Not sure there is much point now. Only seems to be useful for pirates now. I just wanted the fast travel but 45 minutes each way is not fast. That uses up too much of my playing time. sigh.

quads are still nice for planet-side travel... especially on Calypso after Amethera gets completed on the 18th...

Well I already have a slepnir for planet based travel. Which was ok for space but took a little too long and was a sitting duck for pkers. Not sure that it's worth upgrading to quad just for planet based travel, especially since I mostly tp around. And for space travel it looks like they really really want us to use the large ships given the non-warp travel time.

Yeah, 45 minute flight is tough on people with limited time to play. But you can go afk for that time if you're not the pilot, if you don't mind the small probability of losing your connection and getting stuck on a station, and if you have a vtol you won't get stranded. Or if you station-hop you can cut the time down significantly, depending on which direction you're going. And the new stations make station hopping much faster, because you don't have the long hallway between the revive and the hangar. So station hopping is more important now than before. Before it was mostly a fuel saver, now it's a time saver.

I wouldn't get a quad just for flying around the planet. If you need to get somewhere fast, use a TP chip. Compared to the vtol, the Quad is big, bulky and slow on the controls, and it's harder to find a big enough place to spawn. And it doesn't fly at its full speed on the planet either, so it's not really that much faster than a vtol, though I haven't made the effort to find out exactly what speed it does fly.

Even though I am in a society I tend to do most things on my own at my own time. So I prefer to fly myself through space, hence was looking at at acquiring a Quad for that purpose. It's not really a matter of going afk during travel. As a person with a job, there are specific times when I can be online and you can be sure I try to make the most of those times. Extended travel time hurts that whether I am watching the screen or watching a movie.

But EU is a game of adaptation and if I want to get from one planet to another I will find a way that balances risk against time and annoyance. It just bugs me that dropping over to Caly to to sell my esis or pick up some adapted anabolics (there really is nothing on Arkadia to match these) is going to eat up significant play time or will need to be planned out well in advance to hitch a ride on a mothership/privateer with warp drive. Ah well.

Not familiar with station hopping. How does that work?

    Regards,
    KikkiJikki

When you get to a server border, you hit "t" and after 60 seconds you revive on the station ahead of you. Same as reviving on planet. You plan the route right and you can save significant time and fuel. It works until MA turns off the "t" button in space. Which they may possibly do some fateful day... the info tidbit in the login screen still says this feature is "not applicable in space". But it's said that from space day 1 and it's always worked.
