Yesterday I managed to reach 100% status with my mentor. There is still yet one more achievement of the three to get before I graduate, and those who know me will understand why I don’t have it yet – I do not carry a weapon, and I will not harm another living being in the Entropia Universe. I’ve never even sweated anything besides my own IFN singlet. But my philosophy of non-violence is not the point of this post. I write this to discuss my mentor, the one who found me when I was still new, still in my noob armour and still not sure what the heck I was doing. It was in the 8 Points HQ, and he was standing stoically in front of a terminal. I recognised the vest he wore, because I had done some reading about the game before I decided to stick my head into it. I knew it was an Arkadia Advisor vest. I wanted to ask some questions, but I was nervous...I don’t do well with new people. He saved me the trouble by speaking up and saying hello! ACK! OH NO! I could tell the story of our relationship, but that would be boring and tedious for anyone but me. As a miner, never having fired a weapon, I spent a great deal of time as his apprentice since that moment in 8 Points. I came to trust his counsel and understand this universe much more because of it. He was almost always available, and always ready to lend a hand both with answers to silly questions as well as very good deals on items I needed and advice on how best to use them. I came to trust him, as I think he came to trust me. Though I am saddened to see myself ready to graduate, I know I have made a good friend, one who will still, beyond the mentor/apprentice relationship (I refuse to call myself a disciple), be with me for as long as I choose to be here. I may move on, but I trust that he will still be available for those silly questions, and maybe for those simple favours and good deals, too. As I will be available to him for the same, so much as I am able to. The mentorship system here is wonderful, and those mentors that truly give themselves to it are treasures. Neil Greenleaf Stockton was my treasure.
It's been some time since an "apprentice" started a new post just to thank his mentor. I enjoyed reading it. Maybe you could start a forum blog depicting the relationship you deem boring and tedious. Great post and excellent work, both mentor and "apprentice". +rep!
I would almost bet if you file a support case along with Neil and reference each others numbers MA will auto graduate you. They have done this for disciples that there mentor quit and they graduated before being able to do the hunt.
I saw a poor old Teladon, very sick, out in the wastelands. The IFN vet diagnosed Arkfluenza, it causes a miserable death for Teladon. Current IFN vet assistants are struggling to put these creatures out of their misery. They need all the help they can get. With Neil you could make a team and fire one shot to help put the beast out of its misery. Neil can deal the merciful blow at the end, but be confident that you have done good for the sick Teladons....and also graduate.
That is a wonderful thought, and one - as a long-time RPer - I would normally embrace. Unfortunately, it still means performing some sort of violence on a creature and I just not prepared to do that. TO be perfectly frank, I have played many MMO's, and I am sick to death of having to kill so many XX to be able to get a new mission where I have to kill another few XX's. I came here to find a new path. A path without violence or killing. So far, so good Thank you all for your positive replies. I am working with my mentor to finish my education, but there is still so much more I can learn!
If you went on a hunt with your mentor in a team, you could just fire some random shots in there air. I wonder then, if it would still give you the completion for that section if your mentor did the actual hunting, but with you in the team? That way you would get ticked off completed but still would be able to hold to your principles of non violence. Worth a try to find out.
i think you need to get loot to graduate, so maybe with a different teamsetting you can get loot without having to shoot the mob?
just a thought but cyrene has "plants" to kill don't it would that be an option? even vegans kill plants.
iirc one of my disciples graduated in exact same way (we were on different planets at the time and he was impatient, but I'm not 100% sure which of did the hunting lol), so worth a shot! jay PS wasn't exactly a proper disciple , but leftover disciple from old system,; would have graduated 2 years previous if not for loss of system. So I actually had done some proper hunts with him. Just that they didn't count, too long ago.
Neil and I tried to team while he was hunting and I was on the other side of the planet mining, and I did get loot from his kills, but didn't get the achievment. I think damage is required :-( Of course I gave the loot back to him. I've told him that if he needs the space for another apprentice I would voluntarily resign the mentoring, but we seem comfortable right now. I have no need for the armor I would get as a reward, since my "RUN AWAY FAST" and "AVOID BAD GUYS" skills are both pretty high! My only issue is that I would be unable to properly rate my mentor. This bothers me because some very recent, very needy graduate said that Neil didn't give him enough free stuff and gave him a 2 out of 5 for that and ruined his straight 5.0 rating. I would like to try and mitigate that eventually. "Gardening", that was very funny and made me laugh!
Have you tried sweating the mobs that Neil is hunting whilst in a team? I'm sure we can find a way of getting you graduated without you having to resign or compromise your beliefs. We'll use the brain sweat of this community to work it out....
Unfortunately, sweating them is the same as shooting at them, so far as I'm concerned. But I am grateful for the suggestions!
Sweating still aggros the beast. That tells me it annoys them, which means it hurts them. Won't do it, never have. This thread was meant to praise my mentor, not to discuss my own desire to play free from hunting/sweating. Neil Greenleaf Stockton is a brilliant mentor, one who is available and ready to answer questions and queries. +1 Neil!
