    Hey all,

Marty asked me to try and get a fundraiser going... For those of you who know him, I don't need to explain a thing. But for those of you who don't know him - he's an ark trader, very loyal to arkadia, and provides devoted services to all us arkadian miners.

He's a trader, but he's one of the most fair ones. I can vouch for that :). His prices are fair for both buying and selling ores/enmatters. Due to this, he's quite a popular one for ark miners.

However, today, tragedy struck... he was warping to caly on a scheduled warp, and, well... he had logged off. We were at atmosphere, and those of us who didn't log off, were able to safely quad out and enter Calypso in seconds. But, a few moments after, the MS was attacked by pirate(s), and that's when Marty was in the process of logging in to enter atmosphere... but he DC'd and couldn't log out when he found out about the attacking pirates - and because of this he lost 1.5k tt.

Given Marty's prices, his loss today could amount to two-three months of profit from his trading.

So if anyone wants to contribute to his cause, maybe toss him a few peds next time you see him... or do what I'm planning on doing :) buying his ores for MU instead of the usual -1, -2% of daily.

Marty, of all traders, didn't deserve to get pirated. And he was being safe about it too by having been logged out.

Nice initiative, but really when one has stackables with value why would one risk the atmosphere docking?
It saves less than 5 peds as the atmos way costs 2 ped + thruster decay vs 7 ped tp costs.

Now we can be sure there will be more pirate activity as they scored an uber. If it costs 4 ped to take a quad down they can now tank around 300 more quads, providing they miss sometimes too.

I do feel sorry for Marty but and I hope you find people to sponsor this, but I also hope next time he will take the TP down when loaded. Even with fair trading prices that can't be a problem.

Shouldn't the Mothership crew be in charge of safe atmosphere drops?

Everyone should understand that even at atmosphere there is risk involved and to not rely on it for 100% safe arrival without a capable Mothership crew to supply protection or some sort of agreement with service providing transport. Space is a risky place, that's the way it has been since day 1 and most likely will always be, everyone knows the risks involved so it really is their own fault for taking that risk.

That said it does suck that this happened to a fair player but pirates are pirates and space is space. What can ya do? Asking for handouts from others that take that risk also is not a very good solution but GL.

I think the Mothership crew should be responsible for accurately describing to the passengers the risks involved, and for accurately communicating where the ship is (safe/lootable/combat) to their logged out passengers. If a MS can't do an atmo drop safely, then they should tell their passengers so. You can't make a mothership crew responsible for looted peds, since it would be so easy to arrange for pirates to blow the ship up and say you had 100k ped on you.

While I'm a little perturbed as to everyone stating that it is Marty's fault for taking the risk, I do agree that atmosphere is not 100% safe.

However, I'd like to highlight the fact that it was announced that it was safe to log on for atmosphere, and when the announcement came for sudden pirate attack, Marty DC'd and could not log off. If his game did not crash (if EU clients didn't suck?) then he would have been able to safely log off.

For those of you that point out that logging off at SS after being summoned, and logging on at destination planet's SS, is 100 % safe... Please consider that in December, an uber miner who always did this, got summoned, CRASHED, and could not log off, pirates attacked, and his avatar got looted. This uber miner always logged off at SS, and logged on at destination planet's SS.

Therefore, the blame shouldn't be placed heavily on Marty, but more heavily on the faultiness of the EU client.

We all know the probabilty of MA accepting fault in this, and other similar situations. So is this petition "still not a very good solution?"

Why did the pilot not wait to see he had succesfully logged off? Which ship was this? And which ship was the other one Marty got looted on?

Well i have to say i was logging in to do a tp down to the planet , not to go down with atmosphere cuase i know thats dangerous.
its just the fact that the game was still login me in while i shut down the game...so i got looted while i normaly wasnt ment to be online.
the fundraiser was actually a kind of joke but nice of you that you still want to help me out justin.
losing that much ped will effect my business and so it will take alot longer to help out all of you at ark.
But i still have enough ped to get back on my feet again.
    thanks for the support guys!
im still alive and kicking..just only kicking now with 1 leg :p

Sorry to hear about your loss Marty, but honestly why dont you fly with a transport service that is faster, cheaper and runs at 100% passenger safety since close to 2 years ?
I keep hearing about people who get lootet utilizing logged out transports either through disconnects or wrong logging in/out or just bad communication - while the only scheduled transport running logged in spaceflights since its very start is there to choose as an option...

Its not Mindark that is due to fix stuff to make flights secure - its the duty and responsibility of any transport service with integrity to give their very best at protecting their passengers regardless which bugs or server issues they might be facing.

Of course mindark needs to fix alot of stuff in space but that is not related to making flights secure - they have already stated that they will remove the possibility of riskfree travels between planets this year...

Hehe... they intend to do it this year ;) We all know how that goes with MA. I'm hoping for a big space update this year, whether or not it includes removal of safe-logout.

Also as John said, the MS can take precautions to keep the passengers safe. One of those is to watch for any quads hanging in space after atmosphere docking, and try to contact the pilot to see if everything's ok. With the recent increase in multiple-server-weirdness (ava still in space and lootable while it looks like you've landed on planet), this is an important safety measure.

I can vouche for TOS as a service that protects their passengers. I was doing atmosphere entry once and crashed leaving the mothership John noticed this and noticed other red flags in the vicinity and Alaina backed the ship up and got me back inside before I was attacked. He recognized I was just hanging in space to long and figured I crashed and took action.

TOS is a top notch service that take precautions to protect passengers, as far as I know they always run with Mothership gunners at the ready and probably have a quadwing squadron on call to assist if needed.

EntropiaTransport.com is another of my favorite services to use and once was an active pilot for. They don't usually have fully staffed crews but they do a decent job to ensure safezone to safezone transports via active web chat application. Caution should be taken when doing atmosphere drops however. Great thing about this service is seems to be running all the time or as often as it can 24/7.

I don't understand why an ava usually stays online for a whole 60 seconds after crashing. I mean, I thought the object of leaving the ava online was to prevent people from forcing DC to get out of awkward situations? Thus the time interval ought to be exactly the same as if they deliberately logged.

Obviously MA can;t be held responsible for any problems people encounter when using logged-out travel for safety , since this is an unintentential feature anyways. But, what's the point in generally making life more dangerous for those who crash, v those who log out? Since crashes are more often often caused by bugs , not players, it seems really perverse to punish people for them.

After a crash, all the server knows is it can't communicate with your computer. It could have been due to a crash or temporary stuff like internet congestion... only way for it to tell the difference is it the connection is reestablished before the timeout.

After logging out your ava remains for 20 seconds (you can watch the countdown). In this case, the server knows exactly what's going on and logs you out right away. It's my opinion that the timeout is 60 seconds after a crash because temporary loss of connections due to internet congestion (or wireless interference, or whatever reason) can occur frequently and many would be plagued by "you lost connection" messages if the timeout were taken down to 20 seconds.

I remember a few times plagued by many lost connections during the space development updates. Maybe MA was testing the timeout feature and decided they couldn't move it down any more.

P.S. when quitting the game fast via alt-F4, it used to be that the ava would stay in game for only 20 seconds, just like normal logout. You'd see travelers (and pirates!) do this in space to preserve loot. I'm not sure how it behaves now, but it could be the client is able to send off a "logout" message to the server prior to client shutdown, so it wouldn't be the same as a crash.

Kinda off-topic, but still... on-topic enough I think.

Without going to fingerpoint i think what most people dont realize is that if they keep quiet on their losses or continue to travel insecure they are indirectly but actively supporting pirate actions. Why one could ask ?
Because there have now been confirmed losses with that same service exceeding 18,000 ped and thats only talking about the large hits not mentioning the times where someone just lost a few hundred.
Noone needs to wonder why pirates can afford to increase their activity, buy more larger spacecrafts or upgrade existing ones - because lets face it there is parts of the space traveling community who 'fund' them well - by again and again risking their loot with unsecure transports, by keeping quiet mentioning the risks which they know of to others or by not forcing the transport providers they had losses with to upgrade and improve their security standards.
How can one force his transport provider to improve offered security levels ?
Its easy - talk with your wallet and let them know when you switch to another provider and why you do it. Its like in the real world - money talks...

    um john?
a thread about someones loses is a good place to be pimping your transport service and badmouthing others?
is business that bad that you have to be trolling like this or have you no sense of shame, at least i now get why you started your sly little thread on the other forum, everything you seem to post or say about space is geared towards giving you a personal advantage, there is no thought for the overal good of the game at all, you know that some potential customers see the way you behave and think, well, i'll just pass up on using a service run by a person that thinks in this way...

You must be very 'neutral' for reading stated facts as 'badmouthing' ;)
Guess you would prefer everyone keeping quiet another 1 or 2 years until the continuous pirate funding makes affordable flights between planets next to impossible - there is something very wrong at the ease with which pirates have been scoring thousands of peds lately...

Marty sorry for your ped loss, but this is just to funny. We all know traveling in space is not 100% safe and those who claim they are 100% safe are just fooling themselves. As a player we all get the warning you are entering a lootable area. So with that we all have had our warning the only true 100% way of protection your loot it too well keep it on the planet just plain and simple. As a trader the person should know what the risk are and accept them or not.

We all have gotten looted at one point, or will get looted at one point. It is a risk you have to be willing to take and not cry when you loose at the spin of the roulette wheel. I will say this loudly because some think they are IMPERVIOUS to fall and well we have all see EVERYONE fall to a pirate attack at one point in time. Not one MS is impervious to pirate attacks and being destroyed.

So the only way to be 100% safe is keep it on the planet or you can do the 99.99% log off “COMPLETELY” before the ship leaves the safe zone and sign back on when it arrives “COMPLETELY” and is docked at the SS. My question is this Marty you said,“ Well i have to say i was logging in to do a tp down to the planet , not to go down with atmosphere cuase i know thats dangerous.” why were you logged in at the atmosphere if you were not going to go down at the atmosphere?
You said you were going to use the tp why not wait until they reached the SS and give the docked safely @ the SS?

And Justin you said ”For those of you that point out that logging off at SS after being summoned, and logging on at destination planet's SS, is 100 % safe... Please consider that in December, an uber miner who always did this, got summoned, CRASHED, and could not log off, pirates attacked, and his avatar got looted. This uber miner always logged off at SS, and logged on at destination planet's SS.” key point in this is the uber DID NOT log-off he DC and if he was on team chat or a website he could have had them not leave the safety of the SS by saying hey guys I got Dced could you hold on a sec to make sure I’m gone. But he must have failed to do so. While you might say MA is to blame for the faultiness of the EU client is is not the client who went down but the connection of the player if it were the client then all on the client cube would have Dced as well.

I respect you both but remember People have to take responsibility for their own actions and not try to play the blame game. If I had a dollar for every time I did something stupid and lost ped I would well……… be on a beach in the Bahamas sipping on margaritas. I make several mistakes but try to never repeat the really bad ones. This is Marty’s really bad one and I hope he does not plan on repeating it.

And JBK as mighty as the Normandy is she has been shot down before regardless of what excuse you make up your mighty goliath “Normandy” has met its David and a stone.

you are going to try to wave away what i say by claiming I am the one that isnt neutral?
answer the question, what are you doing in a thread to do with someones real financial losses to piracy promoting your transport service, it is shocking bad taste, and reeks of desperation if you ask me...

Not talking about who got shot or not Anthony, we talk about who got lootet - the one case you like to raise about Normandie has been debated to death on the forums - in short pirates funded an special attack with 2k peds fielding over a dozend quads and needed about 7 minutes to take down Normandie utilizing an range attack bug back when Normandie still only had about 50k SI (less then half of what she has now). 7 minutes sounds like a timeframe where even your DC'ed uber person would have timed out secure ;) And back then all our passengers were fine - noone got looted because they had enough time.

Its a moot point to tell a trader he shall just be fine with the higher risk instead of choosing the travel option that is most secure for him...
There is multiple service providers and its good that passengers have a choice in price, time , level of safety they deem to need, etc. - i can still remember when members of one service where attacking me trying to tell how unsecure atmosphere dockings would be - and now they do them themself at less success and it really shouldnt be the next step to tell the passenger that 'shit can happen'...

Different then you im not just talking - Marty has been traveling secure with us and paid for the flight just 1 ped.
Hard to think you really believe i would try to win passengers on the fail of others - what im trying to do is to keep passengers safe from pirates when others fail to do so...its the security of the passenger that counts and should be the center topic - not what you want to make out of it. Think what you want until you get looted yourself i guess ;)
