As I mentioned in another post ... I'm quite excited as well that we as players get to be a part of the ongoing development and storyline. It will be interesting to see how this works, but also to see our contributions become something more than perhaps just a comment on a wish list. :)

Why do I have this strange feeling you'll be in my VTOL quite a bit? ;)

I'd laugh when everyone beams through the portal to Arkadia. Storage their gear. Pull out their Vtols and an entire fleet of vtols launch into the air to go exploring... just to see a bunch of heat seeking rockets fly out of the forests and ground a bunch of unsuspecting pilots.

Headlines for the first broadcast: First wave of Calypson Pilots Decommissioned!
with pictures of vtol wreckage and mid-flight firefights.

    Hi,

really hope for such. As comfortable as these vehicles are (I use, too, for sure), they make the world smaller, the exploring a matter to have one, and the TP collecting a matter of getting a ride.

They actually diminish the game experience, making huge parts of the former way to improve obsolete. Reaching a goal fast might please some ppl, but exactly those ppl are not the ones that will spent years in EU to improve, and meanwhile feed the economy.

I think such overpowered things should not exist, this way a lot of the gaming experience is cheaply sold. IMHO the vehicles hurt the gaming experience, and would I be able to create a planet, I'd not allow them.

Maybe some futuristic hoverpads, moving at the same speed as the participant, allowing more heavy load - but the VTOL's (and other flying vehicles) are a complete failure IMHO. These would have been nice to add a new layer of activity in another dimension (PvP in space, hunting space mobs), but in the current implementation their are just PED-eating exploiting garbage, IMHO.

I'd like not see such madness in Arkadia, I'm quite sure the devs are able to create a challenging game experience w/o such game-breaking madnesses.

70's to 90's carts, and VTols like of a 60's black-white movie, do we really need such? No better ideas?

    Have fun!

Here is a thought for Cyrus. Now that the story line has ended it's weekly chapters. What would you say to releasing pictures or videos of Arkadia on a weekly basis for the next 6 weeks. This will keep the masses satisfied up to launch date. Will also be something to look forward to just like we anticipated the Story line . Just a thought

I'm with you on that one. When I landed on Calypso over two years ago I had to collect all TPs on foot, not even used TP chips. This was great as I learned a lot about mobs locations, geography of planet, how to avoid contact with mobs moving like in labyrinth between red dots and many more. When VTOLs came I collected few new TPs using them and that was quicker for sure but at the same time all the excitement was gone.
I really think that new players shouldn't use VTOLs for knowing planet, same with all of us going to new planet. And I'll try to use VTOL as little as possible during my first weeks/months on Arkadia. I know it's gonna be challenge cause I'm used to just hop and fly but at the same time it will be more exciting.

That' s what he is doing ;)

I agree, just today I rescued a soc mate from some outpost just by shooting my way out instead of flying, even had another soc mate join us. I can tell you that was much more fun than just a 5 minute fly out of there.

Vehicles are part of the game.

If some of you want to be luddites that's fair enough I hope the game developers are smarter than imposing the luddite mindset onto everyone...

Sure i liked exploring, one of my best times in games was gathering tp's on my own (way back when i first started). That was then, times change...

I can see advantages to having a vechicle. But I have to agree with George the thrill of discovery and trying to get TP's on foot just can't be beat and it took countless hours to do it. Now getting stuck at the old outpost NE of Fort Argus pre CE for days was no fun at all. But to land on a new planet jump in your VTOL find all the TP's in an hour or so just does not sound fun to me.

    Hi,

Sure they are, now, on the other planets. Does this make them less destructive to the game experience? Does this mean that every planet has to make the same mistakes, that no planet might learn from the mistakes the other PP's made?

Guess this is a bit unfair, calling me a luddite when I'm just not happy with "70's to 90's carts, and VTols like of a 60's black-white movie" implemented in a way that takes away quite some of the former game experience.

You might have been able to recognize that I'm not against vehicles as such, after all I made some proposals:

"Maybe some futuristic hoverpads, moving at the same speed as the participant, allowing more heavy load"
    and

"[Flying vehicles] would have been nice to add a new layer of activity in another dimension (PvP in space, hunting space mobs)"

    You write yourself:
Now this, where you had your "best times in games", has been spoilt - today it's just to talk some car owner into driving you around, or accept the offer. Times change, for sure, but has it always to be for the worse?

I'd advocate a fresh, more suitable implementation of the vehicles, and to avoid the mistakes the other PP's made.

One idea, stolen from Blizzard/ WoW, would be to wait with the invention of the vehicles for some time. To ensure that at least the initial colonists would be able to enjoy the initial exploration at its fullest, without the possibility to cheat themselves of it by using their vehicles, and thus to reduce the magical first weeks to an afternoon's drive-by.

After this initial phase vehicles could be invented with less harm, but ways more caution should be used not to create the same madness we see on Calypso, where there's the possibility to use your VTOL for better hunting economy, or to make some of the harder quests a plain, simple fly-by.

We have Teleporters and MF Teleport chips for long-distant movement already, quite technical and futuristic implementations of transport. Do we really need today already historical Dune Buggies, Hummers, Helicopters and Buck Rogers like VTOL's in a SciFi game of 2011?

Would a far-future planet in the course of exploring and colonizing really need vehicles like they existed on earth eons ago, in the dark ages? To drive/ fly around when you can easily teleport yourself with the powers of your mind? Isn't this an anachromism?

I'd have no problems at all with really suiting vehicles, as long as it's no way to exploit them. Examples:

Draggable anti-grav rafts as mobile containers, slow 1-person Hoverpads that would hold normal running speed even if the avatar itself would just be able to crouch anymore due to load, maybe - this would be nice to have for any hunter or miner, and wouldn't break the mechanics.

High-speed Hoverdisks, only usable in certain designated race-arenas?

Armed & armored flying vehicles, but only usable in instanced space environments, like the beacon instances we once had? PvE and PvP?

For sure there's a lot more possible, I just wrote down what crossed my mind in a hurry. Much could be done with vehicles, even without repeating the game-breaking mistakes the other PP's made.

I'm far from condemning vehicles at all, I just post to point to mistakes that have IMHO been made, and that could be avoided.

Seeing Arkadia as the last chance for the EU platform, seeing it as very promising, being sure to jump over as soon as it's open, and holding quite some RL value on my Avatar, I'm very interested in Arkadia to succeed.

I hope to have been able to contribute to this goal with my long-winded wall of text, and to not have talked you into the dreaded coma of despair.

My best wishes, have a good time!
