Either that, or it dried out since the map was made... it is in the desert after all (On a more serious note: Did you make sure that the map wasn't just misaligned or so?)
I've never heard of a misaligned map, you can go there and see for yourself. That lake and the one below it do not exist, there are some depressions in the ground there, but the surface is covered with normal desert trees and bushes. I think it's just an older version of the map we have.
