Missions Few minor issues with IFN mission (most likely MA related)

First - thanks for great mission! :)

Guess those issues should be resolved by MA, but I think I'll better post it here anyway, since Arkadian Team have better communications with them.

    1) Wrong "in air" waypoint. It's showing direction to place where you got that mission (where you just comes from), instead of direction where you should go. On map all fine though. Not always, but seen that few times. I could post screenshot if required or my description unclear.

    2) Another issue numbered waypoint on map. They are located on layer above TP layer, so when location near TP they hovering it, making impossible to choose TP from map (you can choose it only from list).

    3) I got CTD during mission dialog and unable to reopen it again to finish reading. :(
It would be nice to reopen dialog from last viewing position, i.e. in position, where you didn't pressed button yet.

    4) When you already done mission with NPC or it didn't started yet - it just ignoring me. IMHO it would be way better if I will reply some message back, even if I can't do their missions or I finished them long time ago.

P.S. I got CTD during "Go to Old Harry", maybe someone could post whole dialog? Or at least starting from question about Oil. :hungover:

Since there's already a topic about this, I'll add my 2 pec. Regarding #1 from Nikto above, you can reset the waypoint by cancelling and restarting tracking of the mission, but yes, the waypoints don't update properly when you teleport around.

I am now an IFN Private and first of all I have to say that I had fun doing the Recruit missions. Dropping some background info about AUDs, PvP zones etc. and forcing players to go to important places was a very nice touch too, good job A-Team. However, I think you could have done better with the dialogue. I know, I know, I'll come across as picky. Most people, out of those who even bother to read that text, probably won't even notice, but what can I say... apart from the buggy waypoints it was the only thing that pulled me out of the story. At one point I decided to screenie the errors I found to maybe help you a little bit but I know there were more earlier in the chain. Please get a proofreader to go over the texts cause these missions really deserve it. See below for a few errors with my suggestions, the list is by no means comprehensive though, especially since I only started with Captain Durham:
    Durham.jpg

    Text readsText should read
ask around in Celeste or Celeste Quarryask around in Celeste Harbour or Celeste Quarry
the more you gets fromthe more you get from
Yes, Ma'am. Got the (double space after period)Yes, Ma'am. Got the
    I guess Me...I guess I am...
    Skinner.jpg

    Text readsText should read
neither the ACA or the IFNneither the ACA nor the IFN (this is repeated in the second dialogue window)
Anti-Toxin ShotAnti-Toxic Shot (that's the actual name of the item, this is repeated in a further dialogue from Skinner, not present in the screenshot)
only way surviveonly way to survive
want to go in towant to go into
Also, an error repeated a few items: no space after ellipsis, e.g. "No one knows...It just is!" above.

One other thing was when Captain Durham sent me to Indomitable Firebase, specifically to Colonel Armstrong. Indomitable has two tps, East and West and I tped to Indomitable East (I think it was, could have been the other way around :p). Suddenly I got a notification to report to Lieutenant Hubble, but he was quite a way off (close to the West tp). I think the intention was for Hubble to see a recruit and intercept me with an urgent mission (shouting or whatever) but I spoiled the entire effect by arriving through the East tp.

I really liked the missions, even if some of the waypoints were a bit wonky.
This recruitment is a nice continued introduction, especially for newcomers.
An entertaining way to learn more about the planet's story, and see different parts of Arkadia. [IMG]

Though I have to agree about the dialogues containing more mistakes than before.
Hehe, maybe there was so much new content, that the time for proofreading was cut a bit short?

    Fussy? Yeah definitely. [IMG]
Like typing the mob descriptions in the new mob threads, did compel me to correct (perceived) errors.
Which probably earns me a membership of the 'nit-picking club'. [IMG]
But perhaps my annoying tendency + current boredom can help save your proofreader a bit of reading? [IMG]
Since Sniqs already covered the "Welcome to the Underground" missions: I'll do the previous ones.
Instead of adding screenshots, I've numbered the 70 dialogues from the first two mission chains.

    May,

At the risk of nitpicking a nitpicker...

I disagree with your comma corrections on items 3 and 5. On item 3, the added comma is incorrect. On item 5, however, the added comma is unnecessary, but not incorrect. Having said that, item 3 on your list is missing the word "to" between the words "going" and "involve".

Additionally, I don't know if "operational" is incorrect in this usage or not, but I hear it used that way in conversation on a pretty regular basis.

(I stopped reading after item 15 so I could get back to gaming. :)

Haha, you are absolutely right about number tree! [IMG]
I overlooked the most important part: the reason why I copied that sentence in the first place.
I'll change it in the post, as the main purpose was to locate the things that could use a change.
It's very good example of how easy it is to overlook mistakes, once you read them a few times.
The bold parts in the right column are to indicate why that sentence stood out as 'questionable'.
(I'm not a native English speaker, and not taught 'by the rules', so I can only point at what sounds/looks wrong.) [IMG]

That's the same with the commas: it's to suggest that those sentences are too long too read.
Since most people don't like to read too long. As you've just demonstrated by stopping at fifteen. [IMG]
Which, I think, clears you of being a full fledged 'nit-picker'. [IMG]
But yeah, going back to gaming is more fun than splitting hairs. I wish I could do the same.

"The communications are operational as intended" or "the communications operate as intended".
Hm, the former just sounds 'wrong' to me, as I understood it to be about the communications themselves.
Not 'comms' as in the system they use to communicate.
    Guess that's open to debate.

English is not my native language, but regarding the line 61, wouldn't be "I was sent" a more proper grammar ? Unless american English allows "was send" nowadays ?
And concerning the line 41, "Wilco", and "Roger" as well, are two words used in radio transmission, especially in aviation, to acknowledge an order. So not really a mistake I guess.
Anyway, thanks for the lessons, interesting :)

Yes, you are definitely right; it should be "sent". "I was send" is wrong grammatically.
There is no difference between the UK and US versions: I simply overlooked it. [IMG]

I have heard of "Roger" for radio transmissions, as it is a quite commonly known term.
But "Wilco" was a new word for me, and perhaps not something you can expect the general public to have in their vocabulary?
But yeah, it's very possible that "Wilco" was meant. Still, for this non-military colonist it was not clear.
Actually, I first thought that it was used as the name of a person; but that didn't make much sense.
And looking at the other dialogues, it was the only time "Wilco" is used: all the other dialogues said "Will do".
So I presumed it was a typo. [IMG]

I'll change it in the list, because looking through all the posts for an eventual change, is not helping in the 'time saving' that the post was meant for.

Regardless, it's always interesting to learn something new. [IMG]
I even found out that the definition of "Roger" is not exactly what I thought it was:
Nice! Thanks for that, and thumbs up for reading through that whole list with a critical eye. [IMG]

Wilco is from (or atleast I think it is) the legendary adventures of the infamous janitor in the space quest series made by sierra on-line i.e. "Roger Wilco" :)

hmmm since "Roger" and "Wilco" seem to be specific to radio communications perhaps they should not be used at all? From what I remember all the conversations took place face to face and not over any comms.

    Roger Wilco
Military (probably British origin) usage for radio comms, that later spread into wider use.
    Roger = Received and understood.
    Wilco = Will comply

May be used separately or together to mean 'I hear you and will comply with your command'

heh, I've been seeing it for over a week and still didn't notice until today. I bet somebody already did but might as well point it out as a continuation to the previous post. The proper plural for thief is thieves, not thiefs. This error is present in the mission text I screenshotted above and also in the mission description (in the mission log) and in the mission tracking window (see below). All of these should read "Thieves".

Haha, I have to admit: it had me on the verge of posting. [IMG]
To the point that I searched if it was a US/UK spelling thing.
But the only thing I found was that other games sometimes call a class "Thiefs".
So I wasn't sure if it was a 'reference'/throwback or a spelling mistake.
Though "Thieves" definitely looks better, right? [IMG]

I believe it is done because the name of the target is "something something Thief". So let's take May, poster above, we'd kill May's (or Sniqs' - hi there fella!) So what the A-team did is type Thiefs.
If they were ordinary Oratans which were thieving, then I'd see it happening they would be named thieves.

I would agree it looks funny. English is not my first language, and I would agree that they made a mistake if it were not that I'm trying to see this from a more logical way - so for me it makes sense why they did it like that.

I doubt it was intentional. I did consider the possibility of them using template phrases like "Kill 100 {0}s" where {0} is replaced by the mob name, but then we would either have the Theif mistake everywhere or nowhere (unless they used these placeholders inconsistently of course :D). Anyway, this is a minor issue, but if they are using placeholders, it's something to be aware of before we get an "Arkadian Goose", "Arkadian Sheep" or "Arkadian Ox" ;)

P.S. Yeah I think they're Oratans that are thieves, just like their friends who are bandits and thugs.
    P.P.S. Longtooths or Longteeth? :cautious:

Hehe, the 'Arkadian goose' made me think of a "gaggle of geese".
Language can be funny: if a term/word is used often enough it can become the norm.
Even if it originally was just a joke.
Like a "flange of baboons", "whoop of gorillas", or even "spam".

A "whoop of gorillas" is now listed in the Oxford dictionary.
And there is a book written by a Professor in psychology and anthropology about a "flange of baboons", originally published by Harvard University Press.

So perhaps if this form of spelling is persistent, we eventually might see "Thiefs" being used in academic circles?
