you need a tool, Ziplex T100 i believe, but you also need 320 textures per section of the item your altering

To apply textures to something you need:
. Something that can be textured - the item will include (C) in the description. Common are clothes, furniture, crafting books. Also some armours and vehicles.
. Some textures to apply - more than just one if you want a decent result
. A texturizer device - eg Ziplex T100, which I can make for u, but there are other choices too
. Skills so that the crafting result doesnt look like crap.

    To apply the texture you:
equip the texturize and Use it. it will pop up a texturing interface.
drag the (C)ustomizable thing u want to texture into the bit at the top of the interface.
each customizable item has between 1 and 3 separate fields that can be textured. Each field corresponds to a different area of the item. You can choose how many fields you do but you have to do them all at once. Drag stacks of your texture into each field you want to do. If you are lucky you will get a preview image in the top left of the estimate. I'll talk about the number to use in each stack in a little bit.
    Click on Apply

The result you get will vary in quality. A really successful result will have 100% saturation level and will look great. A crap result will result in a very low saturation % and will look faded or you may not even be able to see it has texture applied. Saturation % is determined separately for each field. So a couple of things affect the chance of getting a good outcome:
    1. your skills (Material Designer profession) compared to the skill requirement for the texture. You can see the skill requirement by checking the properties of the texture. If your skill is less than what is required you will have a big chance of failing. You can mitigate against insufficient skill by including texture enhancers in the fields when attempting to apply the texture. From memory I think each texture enhancer increases your effective profession level by 1. But you need to use them in each field.
    2. the size of the stack of textures being used in each field. From memory, your maximum success chance is when you have 323 units of texture in each field. so if you use only 1 unit of texture, you are pretty much gonna get a crap result.

TT returns - When you apply a texture to something then,
    - 10% of the texture TT value is lost
    - 90% of the texture TT value is returned, either as increased TT value of the item or if the item reaches full TT then as ped

If you want to re-texture something cos you screwed up or you just want a change then you first need to bleach it. A texture bleacher is an attachment you add to the texturizer, just like u would add an amp to a weapon or a finder.

    Hope this helps.

Does this mean, if you want to have an item textured by someone else as a service, you have to trade it to them first? Being a complete "texture noob" myself.

Yeah if u want someone to texture something you own then you need to trade it to them first. Which of course brings up issues of trust, collateral etc.
