A few other skill gains are being mentioned on PCF, some of which seem very odd. It seems like this profession has a very high number of contributing skills.

Not exactly true. I play on low graphics and I see these orbs just fine.

Would be interesting to see how much wood can one gather in one attempt. My highest has been 15 PEC on a LVL 1 tree.

How does the resource gathered compare to the decay of the gatherer? Is it around the magic 90% return (I know there are discussions in other threads about the 90% return but its just an example).

What I am basically asking is does this align with other professions etc in terms of returns?

    Food for thought...
Do orbs appear on south side of trees only? Can anyone confirm? Cause this is what I am experiencing.

I'll share loot return when I have more substantial data.

    EDIT:
    I gained Alertness.

    EDIT 2:
I found a tree that refused to be harvested by using auto-tool. I think it was because a second tree was next to it blocking/interfering with it somehow. I was told to go into FPS and use the tool manually. This works.

A tree can be harvested by more than 1 person.

    EDIT 3:
Session 1: 4.62 PED Decay. 5.80 PED Loot. 125.54% return.
Session 2: 1.16 PED Decay. 1 PED Loot. 86.20% return.
Session 3: 4.72 PED Decay. 4.72 PED Loot. 100% return.

    Overall: 109.71% return

Can someone please remind me how tool levels work vs tree levels?
If I buy a lvl 3 tool, do I get better boards from all node trees or only lvl 3 trees? Should I use a specific tool level for a specific tree level and if so, which ones?

Noticed no one's answered yet, so I'll give it a whirl.
Afaik the tree level determines what board type you get, that's if your using the tool of equal or greater level.

short moonleaf boards from lvl 1 trees, use lvl 1 tool (..can use lvl2, or lvl3 tool)
moonleaf boards from lvl 2 trees, use lvl 2 tool (..can use lvl3 tool)
long moonleaf boards from lvl 3 trees, use lvl 3 tool

If you use lvl 1 tool on lvl 2 or 3 tree you get short moonleaf boards.
If you use lvl 2 tool on lvl 3 tree you get moonleaf boards, and on lvl 1 tree you get short moonleaf boards.

Yes, the tree orb is always on south side.
And I find the orb sticks out and problematic to cut some trees on south facing hills/slopes.

I did try the lvl 1 tool on all levels of trees on day 1 and only got short boards.
But I haven't used a high lvl tool on lower level trees, so I'm just relaying what was conveyed to me.

I'm curious about decay on lvl 2 and 3 tools if used on lower lvl trees. Once I can use a lvl 3 tool should I use it on all trees or should I swap out tools depending on level of tree?

Not knowing the decay of tool 2 and 3 I'd use 2 for medium trees and 3 for large trees just to avoid having to buy tools every so often. But yeah, I've been wondering the same.

There is no magic 90% return. That is merely a round number that people have latched on to. In hunting and mining, overall long term average returns appear to be ~ 100% minus "decay". For resource gathering, which is different, it appears to be ~ 100% overall return. So, a great way to skill.

If you're using a UL PH-3 then you can use it on all trees, if you're using an L tool, then only use it on level 3 trees because of the MU.

Depends, you gotta find the sweet spots, and once you do you can keep going back to them. I don't know how Arkadia is, but I came across a great place on Calypso with dozens of nodes just in that area. I'd sometimes see up to 5 nodes on the screen at once. Usually places not real close to a TP, and crawling with mobs. As long as you have a vehicle it shouldn't be a problem. Especially a VTOL since mobs leave you alone once you get in that.

I've found it can be more profitable compared to activities like hunting or mining, probably since it's not as popular. I could make a few PED profit per run with the TT tool, selling my short moonleaf boards at up to 200%. Too tedious for me though, and not really better than sweating since it requires more attention.

The only issue right now is that there's no use for these boards on Arkadia so to sell is hard - if not impossible. Travelling to Caly to sell works but eats the profit in terms of travel cost. I haven't tried selling them on (Ark) auction but I'd imagine that too would just not work with the shipping cost.
