Hi there. I've been reading up on EU for a week or so, and thought I'd give it go. When I went to make my character, I had to choose a starting planet right off the bat. I remembered reading something about choosing which planet to start on having a big impact, so..I thought I'd ask around to find what what experienced players feel is the best planet to begin. From what I read, it looks like Calypso and Arkadia are the top choices, but again, I really don't know.

My main interest is in mining, followed up by crafting. I plan on depositing money if I enjoy the game (although I have no idea how much is needed for mining or crafting). I also read about the mentor program, and would want to be on a planet that had mentors available...especially ones that mined.

Thanks for any advice that can get me going, and anthing else that may be nice to know that I haven't asked.

    -Knuckles

Arkadia has a great new player experience and is, in my mind, the best place to start without a doubt. You should also have no trouble finding a good mentor on Arkadia, on Calypso it can be a bit hard to weed through the ones that just want the reward.

Always nice to see someone thinking things trough before starting.
You can freely travel to other planets once you're in-game (at a fee).
The main difference is that the planet that you are born on, will continue to receive a % of your decay, even if you play on another planet. So you support your birth planet for as long as your avatar lives (whether you want to or not).

The practical difference for yourself, is that only new Arkadian born avatars can do the starter missions here.
(The tutorial mission chain where you get freebies like weapon, fap, mining tools, armour, and ofc the Hoverpod.)
You also will get the Arkadian Passport for free. If you are born on another planet, you will have to 'bribe' the immigration guy with 10k bottles of sweat to get it.
The Passport is needed to start the IFN Recruitment mission chain, which starts with nice ammo rewards, and lets you climb the IFN ranks.

Being on the Ark forum, the answers might be slightly bias: but Arkadia is in my opinion the best planet to start.
Calypso is a bigger planet, but Ark is better geared towards starters.
For instance: the Puny here have not been nerfed like on Caly, so they still have only 10 hp, and don't attack so hard.
But if you've already decided that you want to focus on mining: Greenleaf Mining Company can be a good place to start learning the tricks of the trade. And what do you know: that's based on Arkadia.

You might want to give crafting a rest until you have more peds: it's a very expensive profession.
Btw, this is the most complete EU guide, and this is the most up-to-date EU guide.

When you make your account: on the general EU site, you should be given a choice of planet when you sign up. But I've seen several occasions where that didn't work out as intended.
To be sure: download and sign up on the site of the planet you want to start on.

If you choose Arkadia, then join #arkadia (the Ark chat channel) once you're in-game. For help & chat.
It's not turned on by default like the (sometimes spammy) #rookie. So I think you need to type: /join #arkadia

And if you enjoy a good read: the Arkadian Storyline can be downloaded here.

Right, long story short: Caly is bigger, Ark is friendlier.
Welcome, and enjoy your time in EU.

I have done those free missions from arkadia, i have the hoverpod and i have born on calypso. Probably the missions are available for everyone. About the planet, well, the only ones who are better to born in are Ark or Caly, but Calypso has much more born avatars than in Arkadia, there is not a good balance between the two planets, if you choose Ark i support you mate.

Thank you for the fast replies! Hmm...no idea who THE Knuckles is.

I hadn't heard of the Greenleaf Mining Company, so thanks for that info...along with everything else. I also wasn't aware of the decay % being paid to your original planet.

I like the activity on these forums as well. Seems like a bunch of active folks are on Arkadia. Looks like an easy decision to start on Arkadia then.

Knuckles was a Entropian from the past that got banned from about every forum out there and I think even the game.
But no worries, I'm sure you are different and judging by your first post you are (not enough trolling or name calling ;) )

So far so good. I'm now an Arkadian citizen...and no issues with having Knuckles in my name...and have completed the new player missions. The last past on the southern island felt like a dirty trick though...sending me out to a PvP zone that had mobs that killed me in a few hits. I just did the rest of the mining part on the northern island and was fine.

I grabbed a gold starter kit based on what other posts here said about it, and now am working on the IFN mission chain.

Having fun so far and eager to do more mining.

Nice, you're off to a flying start. :biggrin2:

I tried to find you in the Player register to say hello, but there are a lot of avatars with 'Knuckles" as part of their name.
So it might be easier the other way around.
    See you around in-game.

This is exactly my point in this thread. I will link your post just because.

And thumbs up for choosing Arkadia. We may be biased but we are for a reason.

Good to hear I wasn't the only one that thought the ending part of that chain was a little off.

So...I've finished the IFN missions and am now part of the IFN based out of Relentless, I believe. Not sure if this is the end of the IFN stuff, but it was late when I finished and didn't really look around more. IDK, maybe there is a mining division of IFN that I can specialize in?

I did enough hunting during the IFN missions to know that I'd not be into doing that too much...so my focus is still on mining.

Does anyone have any links to decent guides for a beginning miner? I want to try to be as eco as makes sense, but I'm not sure if that is as possible while skilling up? Like for example, is it better to just do ore or ematter at first, or is it better to do both right off the bat? Are amps worth using in the beginning or not? (I've been reading as much as I can find about mining, but these are still the type of questions I have)

Oh, and yea, my full character name is Mickey Knuckles Malone. It's kinda a bummer to hear that my name makes others think of a previous bad player, but well, I like this name!

You should probably speak to Greenleaf (linked earlier by May) for info. You could also check LittleBigMiningLog for info. Lots of miners use the site for various reasons.
    Good luck and have fun!

Welcome to Planet Arkadia! At Celeste Quarry you can start mining missions, it is in the building called "Quarry Manager" or something. It makes you score points for every claim you find and the rewards are, as far as I know, some good skills. Don't worry about the bad reputation of 'that other' Knuckles, we can all see that you are not him.
