I dont much like "dark spots" on the map. On Calypso, before VU10, there was large areas on Amathera that we could se on the map - but not access. I would say; even if no mobs or anything is there, make everything at least accessible. Possibel tu run about if nothing more. But that is not the main point for this post.

What I'd love is a planet map that is truly the whole planet. Like, u could actually swim from one continent to the other (if u had a week or two to spare). This would really make a planet "feel" like a planet for me. And I'd freely forgive creators if they later introduce new continnets and / or islands. The idea is that a world is somehow "complete" in overall shape. Guess all this might be hell on server capacity or whatever... but hopping in fairly early in this forum I chance being less than modest from the very get-go ;-)

hmmm, interesting point. The way i understand the whole server concept from my experience on Calypso, is that each server covers a set distance x distance area. In this i surmise that it includes both water and land. So taking Eudoria for instance, the whole continent would take up multiple servers, something we already know it does. However, i might be wildly off base in this assumption so i guess we'll have to wait on some official word from the Arkadia staff.

I'd love to see to it work that way, would be cool to see the whole planet. Unfortunately it doesn't work that way, it costs us for every extra server we add so we need to grow the population on the planet to justify growing the size of the areas. Arkadia will be quite big when we launch and we have plans to expand fairly quickly as the population grows.
I think in one way it keeps things interesting not knowing how the planet will expand.

Any area developed will be cool with me as I am the explorer type and like to see as much of the world as I can. Just please make sure that hills are not so obnoxious and as predominant as it is on Calypso and RT. I come to explore not to crawl up a hill for 45 minutes to find I get 5m from the top I cant breach the summit. Nothing in this game pisses me off more or faster then being penalised for effort in simple tasks such as basic exploration.

yes we have flying vehicles but thats not what I am about.. its the journey not the destination.

    Hey Bill,

The terrains won’t be without hills, mountains and etc but we have taken into account movement in the design. The infrastructure will follow the story.

    Long as I can breach the top and go down the other side all is good. I dont mind having to find ways in cracks and crvases as long as I dont hit a brick wall 5m from the sumit. If that happens Ill start a revoulution to poke holes in all beer cans shipped in your direction until its fixed. 8=}}

Hm, the problem was, MindArk did it the same way. Here is the link to an old Map of Amethera in 2006 / VU 8.5

    http://www.bahq.net/images/maps/pe_amethera_85.jpg

As you can see, the LAs show very good which parts were open. The north half and the east half were not open.

    The map before was this:

    http://www.bahq.net/images/maps/pe_amethera_81.jpg

As you can see, the iceland is not introduced yet. And the area was not accessible.

And this was not fun. Especially because in even older maps you could see the markers of cities in the areas you can't access.

    That would be great!

    Interesting.
I was wondering, from a technological point of view, would it be theoretically possible to make it so that one could swim or run in circles around the planet, as if it where shaped like a globe ?

    Regards,

i have may be a question, it'll be possible to find some underground areas with uncolored skin and red eyes (or no eyes) creatures in there? :D

because in france we don't have only a "gruyères" (cheese^^) with holes. but many moutains have underground cave. And it's pretty the same with the reste of planete. But we don't have dangerous creature in there... only on movie... that su..s :D

I been using the crytek sandbox 2 editer a bit recently and its really not that hard to use the smooth tool to remove jaged verticle peaks that cant be climbed over. Set verticle rise limts in the configurator before you "Draw" the landmass or set parameters to have the program do it and 5 minutes with the smooth tool after and all is set. No need to set parameters for the individaul rises in the landscaping. Let climb rates be determined by the skill set of the ava Via sterngth, agilty and other skills that can be linked to this action.

Took me only about 2 hours to figure this all out and be functional without any training or even help files as I only have the version released with the demo of crysis. I am pretty sure the "Professionals" have ZERO excuse for doing what they did to Calypso in VU 10 initial release.

I agree with Bill - let ava strenght, agility and other relevant skills mather. Not only for how fast one can run, but perhaps for how steep mountains one can climb also? Perhaps a new skill related to water - how deep one can dive?

Thinking on... as it is, we can swim underwater as long as we like. No drowning. Now, not that there is not enough gear to pay for, but still... what about scuba gear? Some simple basic set could be available from the TT, say standard compressed air type, good for 30 minutes before refill at a max depth of 30 meters. More expensive gear could give more time, and some mixed-gas tanks the ability to dive deeper. A whole new set of stuff here possibly - fins to achieve greater swimming speed, special masks for seeing better / further underwater.
Relevant skills could make a 30 mins tank of air last longer. Underwater flashlights. Special armor for underwater use.

    This could be fun!

It's more or less fitting the thread, so here it goes:
give regions names! :) could be an additional layer on the map so you can turn it off if it obstructs anything. (that's of course in MA's hand...) I know no other game that has unnamed regions...
    here's a random example-map:

The pencil means you can edit the thing the pencil is next to.

I think me and Bill need to go a hiking together some time!

About the server problem.... Presumably a server runs a program which looks after one 16x16km area. If you have a lot of stuff in that area then it will use a lot of resources.... But if it's just water maybe you could run more areas per server? This means you can have temporary areas existing which folks can swim about in. Regarding the globe thing, surely leaving a border server could plonk you on the edge of the opposite border server? You can't let the guys who made pacman outdo you ya know? ;)

Something I really really want to request on this subject is a NO INVISIBLE WALLS policy! They are nothing but a corner cutter and annoying as hell. I'm happy with too steep to climb, that's fine but "you cannot jump over this 1ft wall cause we say so" is just bad and wrong!

Ps we call it super hero syndrome in my house, lara croft suffers from it constantly ;)

    Hat tip to Kay :)
Naming the regions would be a cool aspect of the game. As we are explorers there shouldnt be existing names but ones we create.

Usually first one there makes a name (back in the days) but how about naming certain regions or some landmark based on someone finding a treasure in that area? Someone finds a giant treasure they can name the mountain/river/hill/pass/ cave after them. (After being reviewed by Arkadia team for appropriateness)
If there happen to be super monsters like some dragon or something defeating it also has the same reward?
What do you all think about it?

I'm provisionally against this.... Mainly cause UGC has proven over the years to be predominantly bad.... Sorry to be cynical but to use an example, look how many players have daft or poorly thought out avatar names. Some land areas aren't even named very well

Ill agree here..leave te naming to creative people. From what I see so far naming will NOT be a problem for the Arkadia staff.

Awe sigh.... i dunno.. i really wish they add caverns similiar one in Vietnam caves show on National Geography magazine. it very interesting for treasure hunting and we will not realize that we walk pass the ground that there are many caves under it. We might never know how much sky/spaceship will fell down and cause that deep peneration underground then vegatation overgrown cover the holes and make it not see to ppl. like in IRL as Vietnam and mystery mayan aztec pyrmaid in central american near south american how can ppl not discovery all those stuff. only few of them already discovery as they stats there are more to be discovering. geez.. can u imaging how much will there be discovering to us all for treasure hunting... oh sure. how much will spaceships or scraps or astroids fell down on Arkadia Planet daily. humm that will be interesting how much amt for us to find them.. who know... but that sound too much continue changing geography for this Arkadia planet if spaceships/scraps/astoriods fell down and change the landscapes daily... that sound possible!! like u see how much one astoriod impact at Winslow,Arizona at USA that huge crater.. otherwise i dont know what that call crater that are already inside Gulf of Mexico near mexico or south america there name call "Yucatana or something like that spelling??" that huge impact change the geography.. geezz... i have no idea If Arkadia Planet will have that geography changing alot daily or not??? Well we will see abt this...

    Wow!

You are REALLY out to test the Arkadia staff arent ya. Changing geography that often would take a massive staff to have stuff pre prepared and ready to roll out ahead of time. It takes a decent amount of time to build landscapes like we see in game. Granted what you ask is just modifications of lands but thats still massive effort developement wise. That would mean daily up dates which so far require down time to inplement from MA's part of it all. I dont know about you but should my interest to playing EU go back to a more frequent basis I would not like to see daily down time let alone what it takes from MA to patch crap they mess up.

If the lands are developed well before release there is alot that can be added without environmental modifications requireing any down time or daily patching.
