I've probably been playing a 100 hours of so, completed the IFN mission #1 for the Carabok, Gallard, Jori, and #2 for the Halix. My problem is the high ammo cost and use for even the lower mobs like the Jori young, which take me 123k for 100 kills and drop 7-8 ped. And how can a mob dodge a pistol shot so often at melee range anyway? Then there is the crafting problem where I just wanted to craft some Gyro 2s to save a few ped and with a 56% chance failed four times in a row. How do they expect to keep us inexperienced players long enough to fairly evaluate this game with these high costs?

    Wayfarer,

firstly I advise you to stay well away from crafting as a new player. It's a ped sink and requires good ped reserves and skills to do effectively.

AS far as the hunting situation goes, well it comes down to how you hunt, your choice of gear and also how you dispose of your loot afterwards. I strongly advise you to get yourself a mentor who can have a detailed discussion with you about your particular situation. There is a section on the forum devoted to mentoring that would hopefully picking one in a good timezone with the right type of experience.

    Regards,

An additional warning, the % chance of success you see on the blueprints are not the true chance of success, it's about half of that. So your 56 % was probably a 28 % chance. I know, it's a bit confusing :p

Hello wayfarer. Firstly get a mentor and choose wisely, find one who is in your time zone. He or She will tell you what gear to use and how to hunt to lower your cost. I know what you mean... This game is tuff and if you dont play smart it will cost ya alot of peds... I wish you best of luck and see you in-game!

    1) Read Alice's Guide. It's large but well worth the read.

    2) Find a good Society so you can meet people who're about at the same stage as you, or a little more experienced. You'll learn alot and have more fun.

    Good luck!

While 100 hours should be sufficient to evaluate EU, what you do specifically during that 100 hours is the main issue here. Mindark and the planet partners are all doing their best to improve the education of the new arrivals within each planet's New Player Experience, but still have a ways to go to cover the "street smarts" needed to avoid PED pitfalls.

Your best bet, as others have already mentioned, is to network. If you want to succeed on a low budget, you need to pick the brains and experience of those around you. Many of us have experienced (and paid for) the pitfalls that await you. Just like arriving in a new country, you need to have the knowledge and understanding of how things work in a real economy.

    Good luck!

Thanks for the inputs, the correct crafting success rate explains my failures with that endeavor. The first 40 hr I spent swunting in order to improve my skills, and several hours were spent completing the beginner quest chain. Add to those the many hours reading the forums and 100 hours isn't nearly enough to have fairly judged this new game concept of real cash value for everything. As for Mentoring, the first several requests were met with, "I'm full", "let me check", and other not answering the in game chat. So I just keep looking for a name listed as a Mentor with a good rating and finally found one, though not in my time zone, but at least I'm working at completing it and have gotten to 8%. I've make a few deposits and will stick with it until they run out and all my loot gets sold before making any final judgment.

the main thing any player needs to consider: Do not expect to make a profit until you have reached sufficient gear, skills and knowledge.

for each profession the amount of time/money invested in it differs, and so does the payout.

listed from easy to hard in time/money:

    hunting
    mining
    crafting

listed in terms of easy to hard payout on markup:

    crafting
    mining
    hunting

for mining, it takes maybe 3-5000 ped if you buy all the skills and equip you need to make it self sustaining or very low losses, however you will need another 4-5000 ped's to have a decent bankroll. if you also consider an unlimited amp, an additional 6000-350.000 peds are needed depending on amp type.

for hunting, it depends on the level, but to make it self sustaining at a level were you can get that big markup: 300-400.000 peds, and another 50k for bankroll.

for crafting, it really depends on the category, but weapens/attachments/tools would take about 200k for the skills to a decent level, another 100k for the right BP's, and atleast 100k for a decent turnover.

I'm not saying it's not possible to make money at much lower amounts spend. and im also not saying it guarantees you profit. however, if you would want to work with the best chances, that's what you are looking at.

for now, i'd suggest start out with low level hunting, and maybe try mining to see if you like it. mining is the easiest profession, but to many very boring. in the end, it is all up to you.

Don't really agree with you here. You definitely need knowledge and to pick the right gear but you don't need expensive gear nor high skills. For example, ARS + A101 is an extremely eco combination for low level hunting. That's a few hundred ped and a relatively low ped cycle. I'm a high budget player, but in my society are a number of people who are relatively low level that consistently profit or break even because they know what and how to hunt and have the self discipline to avoid the pitfalls of hunting above their level.

I can see what you mean, however I did not say you would need "uber level" skills. sufficient could simply mean maxing that ARS you're talking about :)

I agree with most of suggestions already made, however I think the main issue may simply be your expectations.
Any the fun activities ingame like hunting , mining or crafting will cost you money initially, if you are lucky it may cost you less or if you wise it will cost you less. It is important to choose the right weapon and equip the mob you are hunting , initially starting with TT weapons the the lowest mobs. In most cases start hunting without armour or a FAP (all are etc costs ) . After just 100 hours you are best using just one weapon type - I suggestion would be the a TT pistol or rifle ( the range helps ).
I am assuming you are depositing so you need make of the your PED

The key to spending less is playing economically:

Any hits you take will build your defensive skill
Only shoot mobs you can kill before it kills you (or if you have FAP or wear armour -PED wasted)
If you can't solo a mob then team hunt (be careful with who )
Successful trading is something you do have control over where hunting ,crafting & mining are a gamble

Getting a experienced player (2 +years) as you mentor will be very useful.
Finding a good supportive Soc can as good as mentor in some cases.

Any luck will help ,so good luck.

Feel free to add me to your FL if you have questions or just want to chat .

I'd like to restate what was already said.

Your returns when using a tool is based on your level in the applicable skill compared to the maxed out level for that tool. This means that every tool is best used after you reach a certain level. Unfortunately a starting character has level 0 in just about everything so your efficiency is abysmal with every tool. To offset that they do provide some missions that give some freebies, but they run out FAST.

This is a very odd setup in my opinion. Most games make it easy for the starting char and ramp up the difficulty later. EU is the opposite! And yet folks do stick with it anyway and get to the point where they don't have to spend a fortune to tie their shoes.

Well, I'm still fairly new, got dampness behind the ear still though, I am told I am taking to EU like a pup to a new chew toy...:dribble:

I can tell you a few things I have not seen here already but, for the most part, everything I have read so far is right on the money. 100 Hours is a good start but, this game is so complex, so wide reaching, that its not even a scratch on the surface.

Do NOT think of this game like most MMOs. This isn't going to be like any of them. There is no "hurry up and get to the top XXXXX" here unless you want to spend alot of real world money only to find you wasted 90% of it. If even then.

Unlike alot (if not most) MMOs, you can't really max out everything anytime soon. You are not going to be a maxed out hunter/miner/trader/crafter here unless you have spent years (and some people a DECADE) and even then, you probably won't manage it. In fact, and I sure hope someone corrects me if I am wrong here (I want to know these people too pls if they exist) there isn't anyone that covers it all at max level. And as I said, some people have been here a real 10 years....

Find a good mentor for mentorship and mentors, advisers, whatever you want to call them, to help you out. A good society is a great place to start but don't limit yourself to just that...this is a SOCIAL GAME. Talk, learn, be POLITE and ask questions and the, for the love of pete and petunia....

    LISTEN TO WHAT THEY SAY!!!!

ahem....sorry....pet peeve...I see this way way did I mention WAY to much....folks that are new like me...a gem of advice here...

If someone has been playing this game for 3, 5, 10 years...and they are NICE enough to TELL you the hard won pearls of wisdom they have gotten...do NOT tell them how they are wrong, they don't know what they are talking about and be a rude....individual....to them.

Be POLITE, be THANKFUL, and be GRATEFUL and LISTEN to them....they been in the trenches....they know. You don't.

Find a good weapon and max it out, stick to one or two mobs for your hunts, do searches on the internet and find good guides for mining, hunting or whatever. Hold off on the crafting till you have a good reserve of at least a few hundred peds and then just get educated and find what works OVER THE LONG HAUL, not INDIVIDUALLY, and repeat that.

In time, if done reasonably well, you will get a return. Its just like anything else, you need to learn to crawl before walking and walking before running.

Check the Player Registery for Dwarf Simeron Steelhammer (just like my handle here) and kick me an invite...we'll do lunch...:cowboy:
