    Heya

I was looking through a few sites for a new sandbox mmo as I need to take a "break" from WoW and EvE for a while. There were a few intriguing games, however Entropia Universe caught my eye as it seems its similar to EvE in certain aspects.

I've never played EU and I hope I'm not signing my soul away with this RL cash driven economy as this may be the start of a very slippery slope.:surrender:

    As such:

id say u joined EU at bad time.. it feels like its sinking.. at the moment i would be surprised if u stay in game over week.. many ubers are selling their gear+skills.. thats usually sign for something bad.. and that can be seen in loot also.. 7 years in game and ive said this many times but now im wondering can it go down anymore.. but ofc this is my opinion.. everyone has their own

they keep expanding the universe instead of concentrating on what there is already.. in under 10k playerbase this area is just ridicilously vast.. maybe thats the reason everything is fucked up

like i say to everyone that have started this game.. deposit 20usd and see where it gets u.. if u dont like, quit. coz if u start from sweating u end up wasting hours and hours of valuable time just to see that this game will take ur money

EU is very different from EVE and WoW. I tired both games and turned to EU and loved it. I wouldnt worry about the uber players selling their gear and skills, they do it all the time when they are shifting assets, you will note that many are buying Land Areas and upgrading! Upgrading is a slow process unless you are rich. It takes time, but you can reach your goals if you manage your money carefully. I would suggest you stay on Arkadia for a while, learn the game. You can get a lot of information here and in PlanetCalypso Forum. Get a mentor who is around, I suggest Mordrell as he is also in South Africa.
The Arkadian Dev team is awesome and they worth hard to make this planet great. The community manager Cyrus is always around and you will enjoy what Arkadia has to offer. The parent company MA is a little mysterious. They don't have the manpower that EVE or WoW has, but they try and get a few big things out each year. The skill of this game is watching what happens, seeing the opportunities to make Peds. It is truely a blast when you succeed. Its knowing where to hunt, what to hunt, when to hunt, where to mine, what to mine and what to craft.

Enjoy and welcome to our community

Lol ruskea, ubers have been selling out for over 10 years now, the sky still hasn't fallen. If anything it is the best moment to start, gameplay for newcomers has hugely improved over the past years.

Welcome to arkadia Xi, i hope you enjoy your stay.

I suspect that may be the key right there... Ruskea is probably having a period of bad loot or unwise choices and is feeling the damage in his ped card. This is something you'll see a lot on the forums and in the game. But there are also many people who think it's a good time to join EU.

To avoid problems, don't deposit more than you can afford to lose. View it as entertainment, not as an investment, get a good mentor, play at the level your ped card and skills can afford and you'll do well. Think of it more as a virtual world than a game, and big surprise... just as in RL, those who budget their resources, plan ahead, exercise patience, keep records and do research can do well.

Also, to clarify one statement that Bjorn wrote... Mindark isn't the parent company of Arkadia Studios. Mindark runs the platform and Arkadia Studios designs the planet content.

Ohh come on, you either suck at maths badly, play incredibly unwise, or are outright lying with that statement.

EU have a very high learning curve so read as much as you can.
Choose from the 3 main professions; hunting, mining and crafting. Best to stay away from crafting until you know the game more. And also have a defined goal so you wont stray away and lose too much money.
Find a good mentor who will give you advices based on your goal and ped card.

Heita Xi41, and welcome to a very passionate virtual universe. We are obviously dealing with real money here, so the successes and failures of certain involvement styles tend to be magnified more emphatically on these forums.

EU is a very successful, decade strong title that is unlikely to fade anytime soon. If you give it a shot, explore much of the worlds, experience their missions, people, and wildlife, I'm betting your own opinion will be favorable.

As many will tell you, read the guides, take it slow at first, and dont be afraid to talk to folks.

You can spend hours, days, checking things out without any need for spending money.

Have fun and best of luck!

    Heya

I must be honest and say that if I was able to weather the storms of EvE - then this won't be much of a challenge :p

My impressions thus far after 1 day of gaming:
It appears to have limited scope since there are defined roles in the game and even so, there are 4: pirate (pvp/space), miner, manufacturer and hunter

Each of these do have depth but are either "shallower" or on par with some of the activities which you can participate in in EvE

The world is beautiful and the avatars are good looking - too bad there are optimisation issues with the engine (difference between all settings off/low and everything max is 25fps = optimisation issue)

Game is very clever in its mechanism - similar to a casino: Making the player aware of people winning, at least in EU its "real" where in casinos they play sounds to mimic slot machines winning. Which results to addiction ;)

Very friendly community - in gamem and on the forums

Good first player experience, taught most basics

Love the depth of the skill system, also I feel like a lab rat which constantly gets rewarded with treats for doing the most mundane things :p

The concept of letting other dev companies "own" planets and dish out content for players is genius

So so far there isn't anything that's game-breaking for me, however I am wondering about the longevity of this: hopefully pvp/piracy etc provides some entertainment without being wallet breaking as hunting and mining will likely become mind numbing :(

Feel free to correct any of the above misconceptions ;)

Excellent assessment on nearly all counts.

As for longevity, multple factors may detemine that. EU is afterall a sandbox. Much of your forward momentum must be proactive.

yes yes im very bad at maths.. when i shoot ammo worth 200ped and get under 100ped loot its coz im bad at math.. and oh yeah forgot to mention i shoot half of the ammo to the air just to prevent getting loot enuf to cover 90% of the tt u guys seem to have

and ofcourse i have some "good" runs also but those are usually at the 90%-110% so not exactly anything extraordinary (1 out of 10+ runs)

i always count everything in wasted ammo just to count out the possibility of very uneco setup or something (i actually try to be eco)

now i would like to hear ur next excuse of my bad loot

There are a great many more professions, some of which are dependent on profession levels (hair stylist, colorer, vehicle repairing etc) but those are the four main ones: hunting, mining, crafting, PVP (in order of most common to least common).

Some "professions" in game that are not dependent on profession levels but instead real life skills are: exploring, mentoring, trading, operating a transport business, advertising, owning property, investing, operating vehicles, pirate-baiting, coordinating events, designing makeup masks, scamming*, outing scammers on forums**, research, data collection, radio DJ, and providing many other services for free or for ped... the list really goes on and on, dependent only on your own creativity and initiative. Oh, and I forgot one... complaining about bad loot, that's also a very popular in-game activity :)

A big contrast to other MMOs is "farming". In most other MMOs, farming is free or very cheap. Here, you can really only "farm" sweat and stones, and those have relatively little value, generally not enough to pay for the electricity to run a power-hungry PC. Interaction with the loot system generally results in a loss. The way to profit in this game is not in your interactions with the game, but in your interactions with other players. For instance, a miner doesn't profit long term by getting a consistent TT profit (buying 100 ped of probes and getting 120 ped loot), but by consistently selling his loot for markup that is greater than his losses. Markup always comes from other players, not from the game.

*Scamming is against the EULA and can result in a ban. I added it here to warn and remind people that there are more than a few scammers in EU.
**Against the forum rules, but nevertheless is done regularly.
