I submitted this suggestion to support today, and I'd like to hear your feedback. What do you mentors think? Good idea? Bad idea?

    Request to increase disciple limit

I'd like to request that the number of disciples a mentor can have be increased from the current 20. Perhaps have the limit increase 1 disciple with each point of mentor skill, or be dependent on the mentor's rating. I could use 50 or even 100 slots.

Why so many? I'm not farming the mentor "gifts" which so far--no offense--are not worth the time and effort I put into mentoring (no, I didn't need 5 facemasks). I do it as a service to new players. As an Arkadian Adviser, I am constantly at my 20 disciple limit and have to turn many new players away.

You know the retention rate of new players, so you can imagine that most of my mentoring slots are players who played for a day or a week and then moved on to other games. I ask them to let me know if they are going to quit the game so I can remove them from my list, but this strategy does not seem to work. Some go months between logging in. I end up having to kick them to make room for new players, which I hate to do. If nothing changes, I will have to continue to reject the majority of new players who ask me for mentoring, which hurts them. For instance, I have one disciple who goes months between logging in because he's at school where he cannot log in. He makes very slow, steady progress and is at 86%. I won't kick him, but for those 3 or 6 months while he's away, he's taking up space that could be used to get a new player into the game.

I understand why the limit is in place, so if you don't wish to increase the limit, perhaps you could fix the problem of inactive disciples by implementing the following feature. Automatically move disciples who do not log in for a month to an "inactive" mentoring state, where they would not count toward their mentor's 20 disciple limit. If they log in while on the inactive list, they would not be able to make progress until returned to the active list by the mentor. The mentor would need to have one free active slot to move an inactive disciple to the active list. There would be no limit to the number of players on the inactive list. A notification should be sent to the mentor when an inactive disciple has logged in, and an inactive disciple should see a notification that they need to contact their mentor to resume their mentoring before progress can be made. I think this feature would greatly improve the mentoring system, while preventing abuse of the system.

Please let me know what can be done to increase the disciple limit and deal with disciples who don't log in for extended periods of time.

    Thank you!

First of all, gratz Neil on the nice initiative. It does seem like something MA could implement (like the innactivity e-mail we get when you don't log in for a while).

Also, another strategy could be to reference those new players to other mentors (like me).

I've recently completed the new disciple system to collect my Adj. Pixie and my Hummer, but I've been around for 10 years. My list is currently empty. I'd be glad to take some new people around and show them the ropes if they are interested. I'm usually on the field hunting or mining and rarely stick around in town for long, so I rarely have the oppertunity to run into the new colonists in search of help and support.

Besides those usual beggers that I kindly discard, I've rarely been approched by a new player in search of actual help and willing to learn. So if you find that type of new player and your list is full, don't hesistate to have him contact me on the forum or in game. I'll take them around to start him off between the different Firebases, and I'll take him out hunting some small mobs for him to get stronger and understand how to do so economically. (or even just heal me and get some free loot to start them off).

Just another way to help this community grow :)

    Cheers

    -Wolf

I still don't understand, I think it might be a language issue. Are you saying the list should be sortable according to the last time each disciple logged in?

If that's what you mean, it would be helpful information for sure, but it doesn't really solve the problem. I'll still have the same number of disciples, the same number of active and inactive ones.
