For the past few years Calypso kept on pulling these publicity stunts with yearly sales of major estates. They even said at some point it's all part of their business plan/revenue model, basing an important part of their revenue on such major sales. This year another major sale was announced for the end of January or will be announced at the end of January(MA's announcement is not very clear on that part).

Is Arkadia planning on doing similar periodic sales(such as CP, CND, Shopping Malls or Medusa)?

Give them a chance Mikass, it is Christmas after all and considering the amount they work normally, the A-Team deserve some off time to spend with their families.

It's not work when it's fun and you love what you're doing. Also, some people don't celebrate Xmas. I don't for example.

Btw, I've seen staffers active here yesterday(including David). It's very possible it went unnoticed among dozens of other threads.

Also, it's not a question meant for the Arkadia staff only. It's also aimed at members of the community or mods such as yourself with potentially deeper knowledge on such subjects. I haven't been following this forum for a while and I'm not really up to date on certain issues.

In that case: yes there will probably be sales of land areas this year.
And on a second note, those sales are from 'mindark' not from planet calypso (anymore).

Are you talking about Arkadia land sales this year?

Also, what do you mean by "those sales are from `mindark`"? How can MA sell land or estates on certain planets?

sorry i meant 2013 ofc (already with my head in 2013).
And about the mindark part, i meant that mindark the game developer is selling something new, not mindark the planet partner. I doubt mindark would allow planet partners to just fill their planets with stuff to sell, that would crash the market(s).

Even if it's enjoyable work, you still need to take time off.

The question of land areas is a common question. Last I heard, sale of land areas will eventually come (possibly dependent on planet population), but they have no specific details to share on the subject yet.

Guess it would be a first. Yearly sales were a Calypso tradition. So far all the yearly sales belonged to Calypso, including last year's Medusa, though line between FPC and MA is pretty blurry, have to admit.
When an activity feels like work it's no longer enjoyable, recreation is play and Xmas is a religious event turned into consumerist orgy but we're going off-topic here. A read you might find interesting http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homo_Ludens_(book)

That is an interesting question indeed. According to tracker Arkadia is second planet after Calypso in terms of revenue. I wonder where that threshold is set, if such threshold even exists that is.

I haven't heard of anything myself from my readings on the forum. I find out news when it's posted for the community; it's always a surprise to me!

Hmm. That might actually be the case since it's a MA sale this time around and they've mentioned the management and revenue model would be different from previous sales.

Next Island "CLDs" at 100ped anyone?

What I believe is that the sale of big items like large LA and such will not happen again, at least not in the way we had in the past. With that last big sale of Medusa MA learned a lesson. I know MA is planning something like David mentioned in his State of the Universe thingy, but I don't think it will be a big sale of land. They might be renting out pieces of land or space based on the new management system David was talking about, but who knows.

Not sure if Arkadia is planning stuff like that, but I really hope they are a bit more creative when it comes to acquiring funds. I also think that it will probably not be in 2013 if ever, we need to get the number of players on Arkadia up first.

The lesson they've learned is CLDs and they've learned that lesson from Medusa investors who piled up in investment group and divided shares between themselves. Soon after MA released their own version of official shares via this CLD system. Akoz is basically the brain behind CLDs not FPC or MA.

Medusa could have sold for much more had Deathifier participated in the bidwar as he did in previous years. But I guess that's what happens when your top player/investors decides to invest in a rival planet(Arkadia in this case). It basically cannibalized Calypso's sale. It's also what tends to happen when you rely on just 3-4 people with enough cash to bid hence the value of CLD system.

I'm pretty sure next MA sale in January will involve a type of CLD of some sort. It makes a lot of sense they'd do it in order to maximize profit.

p.s: Rocktropia RLDs were just confirmed recently in an article as being in the works. I guess that tells us little something about Arkadia ALDs also.

In a previous interview David didn't favour the idea, having other preferred ways of raising capital. But it's possible he could reassess the situation and arrive at a different conclusion.

Can you point me to that interview please?

Well, he did sell some big chunks of the planet to raise capital. Drawback to this approach is creating a big taxed areas on top of an already relatively expensive, high maintenance loot system which can hamper growth of player base.

Sure, you'd lose some Planet revenue by sharing profits but you won't put additional tax on the players that want to perform activities in those areas. I also think the dividend can be adjusted. Calypso shares 25% of total planet income. Other planets may set different percentages.

It was in one of the radio interviews with Zume or NR. There are links to the recordings somewhere here (someone hosts an external site that holds them all) but I would be hard pressed to say which specific interview.

Yes he did get some sort of investment from Deathifier and Hawkwing, providing them with Land Areas with limited capabilities in return (They can't adjust taxes or spawns). I guess it was a good deal for him at the time. Those areas hold some of the more popular mobs (huon, scoria) and Sanctuary Cove so far appears to be the only source of a very useful ore. I am guessing 8 coins also has a good mining setup. So it hopefully hasn't hurt planet growth too much.

If I recall the details of the interview correctly, he thought that with the high predicted ROI for CLDs he had cheaper ways of raising more capital if required and he didn't think his existing investors (equity holders?) would be very happy if he went the CLD route.

As far as more land areas go, Dave has also previously said, yes they are planned, but the timing is tied to population growth.

    Regards,
    KikkiJikki

I'm pretty sure it was one of the interviews done at the quarry, with QA from the audience. Other than that, I don't know which interview it was either. They're all worth listening to if you're interested in Arkadia and haven't listened to them yet :)

Huon, Kadra, Scoria, big Tiarak, Lidacon, Star Particles, Wenrex, Hebredite, Aakas; those can only be found on the land areas.
