    Hello all,

I can not play at the moment, or be active here on the forum.

My Vista is going bad and freezes up after a few minutes when I start my comp.
Currently I am in save mode and that seems to work.

So I will not be online untill this is fixed.

So bare with me if I don't respond to posts or pm's.

    Regards,
    Ion

It seems to be a windows problem.
Still in save mode and that works fine.

    So scanning and puzzling.

    Hi Ion

Try disabling all startup applications and uneeded services. Start > run > Msconfig then on the services tab tick the "hide all microsoft services" and then disable everything in there. Then on the startup tab disable everything and boot into windows normaly. If your pc still fails try virus scan.

If no infections has been found it may likely be a hardware related problem and my bet would be on the CPU overheating (if it was the GPU you would likely get a screwwy screen). If you have Hirens boot CD you can do a burnin test without having to go into windows and if the PC freezes up on one of the burnin tests you got your calpret. Alternatly you can boot to windows grab an open window and push your CPU and GPU load up by draging the open window all over the screen (if you have realtime heat monitoring applications keep them open and see if anything picks up in heat fast), as soon as the pc freezes restart the pc and go into the bios setup and check your CPU heat there (not always acurate depending on the location of the heat sensor). Also check for dust on your heatsinks.

    Hello Fopsie,

I will try some of the things you mentioned.

I did a search on the net and found more people with this problem and it seems to be a windows thing.
I am now running a mallware prog and did a full virus scan yesterday and deleted some crap.

It happens when I start up the comp, it boots up normal.
When I open a program like fire fox or any program for that matter, it freezes up after a few minutes and all screens get white.
Yesterday I tryed windows media player and that worked normal untill it switched to another movie and same result, all was freezing up.

I already cleaned out the comp and heat is only a problem when I run Entropia, so I use a extra fan to cool it.
    This worked pretty good.
But the current problem seems not to be heat related, it happens when the extra fan is running as well.
Also when it happens, the comp fan is not running on full which means there is no extra heat build up.

    Regards,
    Ion

Chkdisk always worth trying. My laptop was dying a couple of weeks ago. One repaired file later and all is right with the world.

Hope it did not messup or delete any windows files. A windows repair from the instalation disk may help if that is the case. Also the virus may not have been fully fixed and some reminants may still be hanging around on your pc withc is why running multiple virus scans with diffrent AV applications is usualy a good idea if reformat is out of the question.

Kind of sounds like a GPU problem but can also be related to a file that got whiped or corrupted (likely drive file but that is realy scarece as a result of a virus) windows repair will also help(burnin test will help detetermine if its the GPU or not).

yes its worth always trying :) always forget to mention that one :p

Before you resort to last resort mesures (format and reload, unless its not a pain to do and your system is setup like mine where a reload takes 5 min) run a burnin test for a few hours first outside of the windows enviroment to ensure no hardware is responsible otherwise you can run the risk of reloading only to have the error still be there after the reload.

and if that doesnt work, start a cmd window and run it there -> chkdsk c:
It will probably tell you it needs to run next time you reboot. so do that and find something else to do for a while

Is it 64bit Vista, a similar thing happened on a system I manage at work and it turned out to be a TDSS rootkit.

The machine would lockup and IE 32bit wouldn't run at all but 64bit would load pages perfectly.

Thanks mate, I found one suspicious file.

I googeled it and it seems to be from Demon tools and it can cause problems like I have.
I renamed it and so far it seems to work.

Fingers crossed that it is solved now.

And than cleaning up the mess it all caused, but that is fine as long as the problem is solved.

I want to thank everyone who tossed out idea's and help.
Even if it didn't work, I sure learned a few new things :D

    Regards,
    Ion

Well I am fully back again.

It turned out that a EU file was going wild.
It took me 2 day's to find the culprit and found it on accident.

Try'd everything suggested and I manage to keep windows running longer than 5 minutes.
Still not able to have it running as it should, I decided to back up everything and consider more drastic measures.

During my backup, windows kept freezing up on one file which had a eyebrow raising effect on me.
It was a file from the dynamic content, namely "territories_next_island_10.pak"
So I tryed to zip it and windows froze again.
So I decided to delete the whole file which fixed the whole situation.
From that moment on, windows was running normal again.

Thinking back of it, I remember that I was on Next Island and had a CTD there.
Well CTD's are not rare and since I crashed I needed to do a few things so I didn't think of it.
When I came back on the comp and was planing to do some things, suddenly windows froze up.

So maybe this helps if someone else gets the same problem.

    Regards,
    Ion
