I use an Arson Ten Ed as mid range tagger / pre damager as well. Goes great with the melee and guns. And the extra dps from the chip adds up. And yeah, naked is what I like as well! hehe
Being L102 swordsman now, the only way I was able to do that was having an imp or mod restoration chip to keep defensive costs down. Even then, it was limited in a way because you needed a puller. Luckily there is a L puller with nice range and very little damage that you can find on rocktropia (I think it is like 12pec weapon). That is what I used to tag with little impact to my mako fal dpp. From unbalanced perspective, this is why earth shock should have been removed completely and melee should have received attachments to compensate as there is little advantage (besides low buy-in) to use it over ranged.
nice thread... thanks for the tips. the Greek Swords are nice to skill with but not so nice in that the break often. I'm working on the 10k puny with falceta and whips right now... What I like about falc. is that it's got about 10 ped tt value so you can use that to figure out how much it's costing you to play an hour or so... also just works out nicely for me since my cld/aud roi is making me around 10 peds a week right now. When I'm not burning these lb I'm usually whipping since I recently acquired the boiga but am a few levels below being able to utilize it's sib... so for now am using viper on puny and occassionally cobra when I get several mob on me.
My main weapon now is the castorian xeno dagger scratcher. At tier 2 it does 110 dmg at 67 reload with a trauma VII. I am planning to buy an ares imp, which will bring reload speed to 72. The invention of melee amps was one of the best things Mindark ever did for melee hunters.
Yes, the melee amps are indeed very nice, but some were event rewards only which makes it hard for some weapons to get the best eco out of it.
I agree that melee has been overlooked for too long, and especially power fists. Currently I don't mind because I stick to the puny missions and the S.I Psy-blade works well for them. But once it's time to go for bigger mobs I will have to step away from power fists to keep hunting. Thankfully there are short- and longblades to use. But still. I'll leave more in-depth analysis to more experienced people.
I think power fists are indeed underdeveloped, probably the least developed weapon type in the game. When it comes to melee, or playing purely melee, it can be just as good as playing with a ranged weapon. Yes, with ranged you can often kill a creature or at least get it to half health when it reaches you, but in the end you will lose out on defensive skills because you are taking max 50% of the time more punches in the face. Defensive skills are hard to get to begin with. There are still a lot of options, don't get me wrong, but it is mostly in the (L) side of things and you don't want to end up constantly needing to keep your eye on the auction house if the weapon you are wanting to use is not available. We currently have the melee weapons that drop in mining and in aakas. I wonder if anything can be done to have one or two additions to those loot pools. Not to mention planetside mining can give containers and used to give the liakon armor too. And in aakas you can find MF chips and armor too. As for fist weapons, it is a rarity to see a worthwhile PF. Shortblades are used even less than longblades I believe, and whips only became populair this year because of taming. I feel like I'm ranting here, but I'm bored at my internship. Anyway, it seems mostly the melee players seem to have responded on this topic, and from what I gather something should be done indeed. IMHO I think that MA needs to get rid of the shit that no one used anyway, or want to use, and replace it with a little bit more usefull stuff. If they claimed that the playerbase grew this year then they need to grow along with the needs of the playerbase too.
Don't forget, melee also have problems with drones, etc, which don't always close into melee range, or are already shooting at you before you get close enough to poke them. Anyway got a Genesis Arcspark as planned, and have an amp vi ready for it. Just have to skill up abit more before I can use it. Guess am setup in terms of melee gear for the next 6 months to a year at least. hehehe
Then you area lucky ones yes. Since I haven't hunted created that do ranged attacks too I have totally forgotten about them. Some 'normal' oratan on planterside indeed use a form of crossbow and the droids in the UG shoot stuff at you too. So getting to them before being hit can someitmes prove challenging. And congratulations on getting your weapon upgrade. I hope it will have you set for longer though
Considering am about 7 levels away from recommended for the Arc, will be a couple of months of intensive skilling before I can even consider using the Arc, let alone maxing it. The price was pretty decent and it is a pretty rare weapon, so didnt want to wait. So I figure at most a year before I have to research upgrades again.
Monria launched a whole new range of (L) powerfists not long ago, named boxing gloves. I'd check them out if fisting was my cup of chai. I'm sure there are people crafting them, but don't know whether they are auctioned on Caly or if one would have to travel all the way down there and get them from the shops. Probably easiest to pm a local crafter and try to get a bulk deal. Btw, just remembered, Monria also has a melee durability amp that looks quite awesome: http://www.entropedia.info/Info.aspx?chart=Attachment&id=241 I've never tried it, so I can't say anything about the eco of the amp itself. Nor do I know the current asking price.
I would not totally ignore the UL katana swords. You can use them reasonably effectively once you get to 30ish in longblade and they are reasonable in price and availability. Tier them up and add a trauma amp and hack away
The Nano Katana's are in the list, although with the auction data is seems they are not often being sold so their availability is very low. And that is the problem with most swords, their availability is very low. Even the Arkadia swords - there always used to be a few in auction if each type, now I feel like you have to try hard to get one (especially at a decent price).
Maybe you'd like to consider crafting the blades you need yourself. The Arkadian blueprints aren't hard to get, nor are the ingredients needed. It is not the cheapest option if you calculate the crafting losses into weapon eco, but o.t.o.h. does not require a huge layout every time you need one. It can help bridge a skill gap to an unlimited weapon you're aiming at and/or allow you to take your sweet time for a decent offer to show up. I was already collecting the blueprint series for this strategy before I opted for shortblades instead.
I was not thinking of the Nano Katanas but this sort. http://www.entropedia.info/Search.aspx?searchtext=katsu&type=search
Those are all weapons that you need level 100+ in skills to have maxed, using them below that is very uneco. (you can check that in the entropedia weapon compare)
I'm just getting into melee too - got me a few blades - i find it a bit different than shooting and seems way expensive in comparison - i need to figure out how to use them properly - i have a question for all you all: why is everyone selling their amps recently?(being just before valentines) - i noticed alot of drop in value amongst other weapons as well and haven't pinpointed a cause yet (besides the upgrading)
